Introduction The purpose of the study was to explore how church based heart health promotion programs benefit older adults. The research also included what factors need to be in place in order to facilitate a successful group within the church community. Coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure are three huge medical conditions that many aging Americans face. The risk of developing these chronic and progressive disorders is highest among individuals over the age of 55 (Banerjee & Strachan, 2015). These individuals are also considerably more likely to attend church on a regular basis (Banerjee & Strachan, 2015). By implementing Church-Based Heart Health Promotion Programs in the church community it not only benefits member’s physical and mental wellbeing but plays a key …show more content…
Twelve ordained pastors and twenty one older parishioners who attended church regularly were interviewed. These parishioners did not have any major health conditions and were asked to explain how the churches could be suitable locations for helping older adults promote positive help. They conducted interviews and held small focus groups with the selected individuals. The authors wrote the article in such a manner that it was well written and easy to understand, the research methods were clearly explained as well as the research findings. The older adult population greatly interests me and from this article I gained ideas on how I could create a similar group in my own church back home to help promote healthy lifestyles. So many older adults use the church as their source of community and socialization so it is the perfect place to embody health promotion as
Many researches in the past have drawn a connection between religion and successful aging, but I personally believe that this connection is important due to the purpose church and faith give to individuals. In my opinion it is the purpose people find in believing in a higher being that cause them to become active mentally. It also gives them the needed supportive surrounding community. As elderly they gain friends of a shared faith going through similar changes as them and young adults who in many cases are willing to help them out and visit with them. In some many ways I view the religious involvement of the Nun’s as a main factor for the pause on Alzheimer’s they
If these primary goals are accomplished, then worship will not be empty and simple-minded. Instead, the worship atmosphere would be held to a higher standard and, she believes, both pleasing to God and attractive to those who do not know God. " Reaching Out without Dumbing Down" is a book intended for church leaders, elders, or pastors who are considering altering their current worship style to attract more unsaved people. The author provides excellent standards to help pastors and worship leaders plan, execute, and evaluate worship services. These same standards also provide a great opportunity to educate the church family on the reasons behind the use of certain worship elements.
After spending an afternoon interviewing my elderly father-in-law, I gained insight into how he perceives the aging process and the impact on the quality of his life. First, and foremost he viewed aging in a very positive and healthy manner. He believes that a positive attitude assists in accepting physical and psychosocial changes and enjoyed the fact that he and his wife are both physically fit and cognitively alert. He felt confident that advances made in health care and the quality of their lives would continue to be empowering. He enjoys the benefits of being a senior citizen including discounted travel, free education, and other incentives marketed towards seniors. He expressed a sense of well-being with respect to the numerous housing options geared towards the graying population, such as Retirement Villages, and assisted living. However, the subjects of Long Term Care, Social security reform and government involvement in health care reform were subjects he regarded with very strong negative emotions. During the interview these issues as related to his experiences with health care were discussed with zeal and frustration.
Focus groups can be used in my Applied Project, and in general, to gain a more accurate idea of how people feel or think. Bryman and Bell (2015) point out that when an interviewer only has one person to interview, that person may say untruths, knowingly or unknowingly, and in a group setting others are more likely to call that person out. More than one person allows individuals to possibly dig deeper in how or why they feel or think a certain way because people tend to feed off of each other and can bring discussions out of others. I may gather a bit more how followership is viewed, dealt with, and ways to improve the understanding and actions of various followers.

To start off, I am going to explain the Health Promotion definition. Health is one’s ability to function well physically, mentally, and socially in order to function within the environment in which they are living in (World Health Organization, 2016). Encouraging one’s control over their own health in relation to social and environmental interventions defines health promotion which leads to the optimization of health (World Health Organization, 2016). It is essential for older adults to partake in changing their lifestyle in terms of their behavior and applying the knowledge they receive from health care providers in order to promote health (World Health Organization, 2016). Older adults mostly have a hard time taking care of themselves and need the assistance to guide them for their well-being. Therefore, nurses have a vital role in providing information and teaching individuals how to gain healthy ideas to promote healthy behaviors. Health promotion is a crucial element in supporting an older adult living with a health challenge such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Economic and demographic changes are concerned with high school dropout and academic achievement, high college incompletion rates and a achievement gaps in the labor market have caused policy makers, educators and employers to seek solutions to the education and training of students that enhance their skills to make them college and career ready. Internships are resurfacing as an educational approach that can possible bridge the gap between education and work when aligned with the values and expectations of the major key players, scholars, employers and educators, with the substantive support of policy makers.
The importance of evaluating qualitative and quantitative information and incorporating the relevant data into the daily operations can create organizational sustainability. When it comes to business, it's critical to evaluate not just the numbers or metrics (quantitative), but also the information that tells you the why, when, or how a customer shops and determines what their purchase will be (qualitative). As a manager, it's a vital asset to receive customer service reports on a monthly basis, as they provide both forms of information and can help drive key metrics such as margins, sales, customer counts, and average ticket (quantitative). However, this information is aided by the fact that you can determine or target a customer based on
The questions listen below are overview questions that can be asked of any qualitative study. These questions were answered by examining the article by Karagozoglu & Kahve (2013). The level of evidence done in this study I believe is level II. The evidence was obtained from well-designed randomized control trials.
Healthy ageing impacts on the health system as more and more aged people are more likely to be active and healthy nowadays with an improved quality of life through various attributes such as physical and mental stimulation, along with the adoption of good behaviours, such as a healthy/balanced diet, exercise, regular health checks and having hobbies, which each help to improve their quality of life. Ultimately, healthy ageing impacts on the health-care system through adopted behaviours and values chosen – As more aged people are interacting regularly within social groups, sporting groups and many others, they are able to freely interact with others, along with participating within certain activities, which help to physically and mentally stimulate them. Through these actions, it reduces the risk of illness and disease, working to improve the physical and mental health of the aged as they move through the ageing process. It is impacting on the health system due to the fact that, as the aged become more competent, they are less likely to access certain services and facilities due to their physical and mental state. There will be fewer cases of certain illnesses and diseases amongst the aged population if individuals are more productive in their lives. If the aged are more independent,
Qualitative research has gained significant recognition in the social science sphere with its holistic and purposeful pursuit in illuminating new areas for research lacking through quantitative research. (Carey, 2012; Cleary, Horsfall, & Hayter, 2014; Reeves, Kuper, & Hodges, 2008; Stevenson, Britten, Barry, Barber, & Bradley, 2000; Thyer, 2012). Qualitative research uses a variety of methodologies to explore an individual’s inner world, expand our understanding of a social phenomenon, and advance and discover new theories (Carey, 2012; Fortune, Reid, & Miller, 2013; Saldana, 2011; Thyer, 2012). Stevenson (2000) describes qualitative research as an in-depth investigation into the inner world of reasoning, decision-making and meaning. Furthermore, qualitative research takes into account the context and history that shapes presented information and ventures to understand participant’s experiences, thoughts, opinions, and feelings towards their social reality (Ivey, 2012; Nielsen, 2011; Thyer, 2012).
Prior to beginning the study, permission will need to be obtained from the institutional review board (IRB) and approval from the desired institution the study will take place (Creswell, 2014). Once the study is approved by IRB and the institution permits the study, then the study may begin. The proposed study will conduct interviews, observe classrooms, and collect narrative stories on underrepresented students in STEM who are in a wide range of class sizes and teaching styles. There will be three sets of interviews: before, during, and after the course. The observations and narrative stories will take place throughout the course.
What hypothesis do you believe was being tested by this data? Explain why you believe that.
Over the past couple days I had participated in observing activities and social outings at the beach Fletcher Cove, in Solana Beach. During my experience a lot had happened that I had never noticed before. Before starting my research, I had an idea to leave my phone locked in my car so I would not have any distractions so I could maximize the potential for this new understanding. Spending 40 minutes at the beach for 3 days straight you start to realize things you have not payed attention to in the past.
The study will be inductive in nature. Unlike the deductive approach, the inductive approach involves the researcher generating theories, concepts and themes form the retrieved data. In other words, the researcher will have to look for the specific prototypes and patterns from the data collected and hence come up with their explanations. Basing on this philosophical approach, it is difficult to develop hypotheses at the start of the research. Thus, it is only through the pattern regularities between variables that the researcher can be able to generate theory and hence, make conclusions. The inductive approach is always associated with qualitative methods. Hence, qualitative methods will be at play in the study. The qualitative research approach
