I strongly disagree with the Dickenson County School Board extending each school day by one and a half hours. I do not feel as if extending school hours will benefit students or staff. An extension of hours will cause students and staff to become more fatigued. Students and staff may not have enough time for socializing or other activities. Plus, regular school days contain enough hours already. The school board must consider all of the negative effects adding hours can cause before making a decision. Before making a final decision the school board must also weigh the pros and cons to keep from making an inadequate decision. First, extending school hours by one and a half hours will make students and staff more fatigued. Extending school hours and staying a longer amount of time can overexert students and staff physically and mentally. The more time students and staff have to stay at school the more work they will have to complete. Also, the longer the school day the more work they will worry about. For instance, the more time spent working the more worn out students and staff will be. Plus, some students and staff already stay after school to work extended hours. This will only give them more work to do an an even longer day. …show more content…
For example, students will not have time for sports if school hours are extended. In comparison, students and staff will not have an ample amount of time to socialize like they do now. If school hours were to be extended that can take away student’s and staff’s social life during the week and only leave them the weekend to socialize. On the other hand, staff members have families they may need to get home to. With extended hours they can possibly get stuck working later than normal. This causes staff to not get to spend that time with their
School days should be shorter fro students because they do not get enough sleep, have to much homework, and have barley have time to participate in extra curricular activities. A majority of students have sleep depravation due to school. If school would either start or end late students will have a greater opportunity to get more sleep. Teachers expect students to pay attention for 90 minutes while the night before they were up late finishing their homework for there classes. Some teachers do not realize that students have a life and work or have other obligations that take up a major portion of the students.
Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
The school systems are constantly changing. New ideas are being tossed back and forth between school boards all over the country. Now they’re tossing around the idea of having 4-day school weeks, rather than a normal 5 day school week. Some think it is a terrific idea, saves funding in the educational department. Others think that parents will have issues with it, having to deal with extra childcare cost, also how will the younger children deal with the longer school days. This issue will effect, not only parents, but teachers, school bus drivers, and students etc.
This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their school starts later. Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before.
Why should teachers be inconvenienced? This is the question that came to mind when I was ask should school be lengthened so that students can get extra help with school work? As students, we are in school at least seven hours a day for five days a week, and that about 35 hours a week dedicated to educational studies. I feel that it is unnecessary. I have four reasons why I do not feel that extended school is necessary. These reasons are that students do not take education seriously, some students have obligations to their families, more cost to the schools budget, and teachers have a life outside of the classroom.
Another benefit of later school start times is health benefits for the students. Because of the hormonal
To begin with, students have more time in class. Since there is more time, students can finish homework and other assignments during school hours. After a long day of work and assignments, I feel that coming home and doing more
... with Europe and Asia, the American Board of Education placed project schools around our nation to examine the effect of extended school hours. Extra hours, however, will not contribute to increasing test scores as well as other factors can. Instead, the government should provide our schools with more qualified teachers. Without professional teachers, extending the hours in class cannot possibly help US students.
My Ridgeview Middle School is thinking about making the school hours longer. I completely disagree about this because I believe it's a little too hard any ways with the time, but now there's upgrading the time and making harder on everyone else.If the schools are making the hours longer then sometimes people need to just stick with what they got and be thankful for what they have because it might be over soon.
Kids alaways complain about the bus arriving late and that is because the drivers don't have enough sleep and wake up way too early. If the school changes it's schedule the bus driver will have a good rest and be at the bus stop on time. Students even complain that the teacher don't usually teach well some days or even don't grade tests fast enough and that is because they need their sleep and if you change the school schedule the teachers will have more than enough time to grade very student's test and will be well rested to teach in school better.
Also, students get a day off to work on extra work and relax.(Scholastic 2004) Last, students might have stress from getting home later. They will have more time on the weekend to work on homework and study. Students in sports or other activities don’t have as much work to make up.(The Advantages of a Four Day School W...) A four day school week can help everyone and improve scores along the way.(Macdonald
The school board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day . I strongly disagree about the school board adding a hour and 30 minutes to school hours .
If students aren't happy with their classes or schedule, it should be allowed to change. A later start would really impact schools because it’s been scientifically proven that students brains don’t officially wake up until about nine or ten o'clock in the morning. If we change the school start time to ten o’clock it would allow children to have a better ability learning new things and less students would be sleep-deprived. Another thing that should be taken into account is a longer lunch because it gives students a little time to have fun. Schools also need a longer lunch because calling zones takes a long time and usually the last zone called barely has enough time to finish their food.
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
One extra day of school cuts into precious relaxation time of students and teachers alike.
