There have been many researches on whether school day should start early or later in the morning. Some claims that it should start early because students will be more active and will have free time after school for various activities, like sports. But others think it should start later because when it starts early students are forced to wake up very early every morning in order to get ready for school while they are extremely stressed and rushed to get to school time.

Pro-argument/ Supporting Claim:
Students who suffer from lack of sleep because school starts too early are exposed to higher rates of obesity and depression as cited by Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics also lack of sleep affect negatively on the student’s performance at school.
B. Evidence: according to (sleepfoundation.org) there are many advantages for the students who get enough sleep; as for example: less depressed moods, less tardiness, normal metabolism, therefore, less obesity rates and also better grades.

If school day starts later student will have a boost to attend their classes, therefore, they will have higher grades and they will not feel too tired while attending their classes.

According to (ewa.org) researches analyzed data from more than 9000 students at eight high schools in Minnesota, Colorado, and Wyoming found that starting school day later resulted in an increase in student’s grades and attendance and decrease in tardiness and depression symptoms.

They adversely argue, as stated by the article titled, Despite Research on Teens’ Sleep, Change to School Start Times Difficult, “Students will have less time later in the day to spend with their families if school starts later” (Blad). Although this seems like a logical belief, it is not always the case. Students may have to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, therefore, they would have a larger window of time to spend with their family after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities, but resolving that issue is simple. In the two articles, “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why” by Dan Weissman. Each author uses different evidence to support his or her claim about school starting times. According to “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”, most teenagers are not getting the proper rest at night and is causing a severe consequence to their everyday experiences. Students need sleep because it can prevent a child from falling asleep in class and helping the child focus. “students reported less depression when there was a later starting time.”
Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Also many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
One of the benefits of later school start times is improved student performance. In a study conducted by researchers from the University of Minnesota, it was found that over eight hours of sleep each night boosted test scores, attendance, and overall academic achievement (Long). With a later start time, students would be able to get a better night's sleep, and would be overall more alert (Morin). If students in school are more alert, they will be able to pay more attention to teachers.

Starting school later also has a lot of health and academical benefits. Even if the school day starts 30 minutes later, It has proven to show great benefits for teenagers. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night.
