Recommended: The importance of recess in elementary school

improve their physical abilities. Moreover, children get to build upon their motor skills and natural athletic talents. I know we all as parents and people concerned for our children want the younglings in our lives’ to be presented with a every opportunity to be physically healthy, which is exactly why school recess must remain available for children. To tell the truth, you never know when the next football, basketball, soccer star, or even cheerleader could be improving their personal athletic talent at recess time. To take into consideration those that believe recess may take away from reaching certain standardized testing score requirements, which are government mandated in academic learning today I must bring to light this statement …show more content…

One crucial reason I believe this break is warranted is due to the fact that when children are granted with a break period, which school recess provides to them, their overall brain function improves. For example, a child’s aptitude to recall information is significantly greater after they have taken part in educational instruction, and then been granted with recess time. Likewise, it is noted that children who are afflicted with Attention Deficit Disorder perform more advantageously, in an academic setting, when they have been able to partake in school recess (Santa 79). The American Academy of Pediatrics testifies to this sentiment by stating, “Optimal cognitive processing in a child necessitates a period of interruption after a period of concentrated instruction”(Murray & Ramstetter, AAP 2) Imagine if your employer required you to work for six hours straight and never offered you a break; how would you feel? I can only assume you would not be a “happy camper.” Thus, I strongly recommend that children be permitted to enjoy the multiple brief reprieves from academic learning, which they by my standpoint, have a right to.
