When I hear the word “Football,” I think about the violence, the adrenaline when you watch all those players either getting tackled, or getting a touchdown for their team, but I never came to think about it affecting my future, making this huge decision over lettering my son or daughter play football. If I were to ever have any children, I believe that I would let them play, but knowing that being a mother means caring for your son or daughter's health, and knowing if they are safe is a priority, by allowing my son or daughter to play “America's Obsession,” not only am I preventing them from gaining any skills out of the sport, but I am damaging something that could have been his/her future, and just maybe not ever seeing them again. My response to my son will be similar to many fathers, an uncertain yes. I feel as if parents should give their child the opportunity to choose whether or not they would have the desire to play football. As for me I would definitely let my daughter or son have the chance to play football. In Scott Fujita’s article “Would I Let My Son Play Football?”, he states “He’s right. It’s not for everyone. Kids that want to play football should get the chance to have their parents support in their decision to play. Would you like to say to your child "no you can't play football anymore, because it's too dangerous." Even though they love it. In stadiums, parks and fields all across America, many youth participate in a journey through defeat, heartbreak, hard work, and success. Practicing for hours, rain or shine, to be able to snag that game winning touchdown in the back of the endzone. In class we’ve been studying about concussions. Having concussions can lead to many medical problems in the present or in the future. It makes me think would I let my child play football? I would give my child the permission to play football because it's a stress reliever, life experience and it builds character. First of all, football is a stress reliever for the players playing football.
Playing sports can become psychologically and physically damaging when they are taken way too seriously and people start to ignore their limits. Some athletes feel so much pressure, sometimes from their parents or from their coaches or even from themselves, that they appeal to highly questionable methods to improve themselves. Examples of this include having excessive protein and even doing steroids that can cause hormonal and sexual disorders, temporary infertility, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and several other physical changes. It is estimated that about 3.5 million Americans do steroids and about 3% of American teenagers have tried it at some point in their lives (Winkel). While playing high school sports, an athlete is vulnerable to a variety of physical injuries that range from minor fractures or pulled muscles, to major fractures and breaks. It could even lead to career ending injuries. Not only are there physical dangers, but there are also psychological dangers such as anxiety, the weight of peer pressure, and the depression of losing and letting your team down. Studies have shown that athletes with high anxiety usually suffer the most after a game. Whether the team wins by 20 or loses by 10, they will never be 100% fulfilled with the way they played. They will constantly run things through their head of what they could've done better, or what they should’ve done different. As much as athletes would rather think about the pros of their career, a huge con they need to consider is the injuries. Whether it's being hit with a “helmet to helmet” tackle in football and getting a concussion or injuring your neck, or being hit by a fastball in the back or ribcage and having a broken or fractured rib, or even rolling your ankle coming down from jumping up for a rebound in basketball. Football is a very dangerous sport but I don’t think we should stop kids from playing it. Me myself, used to play an loved every minute of it, yea it’s a dangerous sport but very enjoying. Banning college football is a shocking debate that has been around for many years that most people do not think about. Fully banning the sport at the college level will not do any good; however, we should take into account the changes that should be made to prevent long-term injuries. People all around the world wrestle, or they ride bulls but people think football is dangerous. With all the protective gear we have now a days, children will not feel even a little bunch to the shoulder. Think of all the positive things that will happen to little children if they start playing football. A lot of harm and stress is created for the kids who play. Football ,while fun, does a lot more harm than good. A lot of hospitals in auburn have seen kids with many concussions,broken bones,head injuries. If one town decided to set some new rule, Junior football leagues are now disbanded, the town might seeing less and less injuries. The next town over will see the improvement in kids health and well being and would also diaband junior league football. Kids would have better anger management skills, cognitive thought process, happier kids. Maybe after seeing such a wonderful improvement everyone would consider setting those new rules as well, for the well being of our youth. The less football is played the better change they have of living a longer healthier life style. When they are older there brains will be in much better conditions. When they are older they will have less stress and depression, all of which can be caused by playing
