Throughout the years there has much debate about the nature versus nurture theory. However, in more recent years, it has been determined that both nature and nurture are crucial aspects to an individual’s lifespan development and overall social behaviors. Behavior is a result of both an individual’s nature and the environment in which they are nurtured in. It is 50% nature and 50% nurture interaction. These interactions and experiences will affect the way in which a person develops cognitively, physically, emotionally and socially (Berk, 2013). The nature aspect is based on individual’s genetic and hereditary attributes (Berk, 2013). These are generally the features and traits that we inherit from our parents. These questions bring me to the gene-environment interaction philosophy. Gene-environment interaction philosophy states that due to their unique genetic makeup, individuals differ in their responsiveness to qualities in their environment (Rutter, 2011). The gene-environment studies have been widely used to evaluate how nature and nurture work together to produce positive or negative results in behavior and learning abilities (Berk, 2013). Additionally, researchers have proved that heredity and environment are correlated (Rutter, 2011; Scarr & McCartnet, 1983). The gene-environment correlation theory states that in actuality genes influence the environment to which we are exposed (Rutter, 2011).
