“I believe that I’m at least competent as a writer as I can usually fluidly express ideas, but those technical skills will be even further crucial once I enter college and the adult world. The sooner I can learn these skills to better my writing, the better prepared I’ll be for any writing situation I find myself in the future.” When I entered the class of Front Range Composition on January 10th, I was armed only with my expectations of what I hoped to learn and the basic writing knowledge I had gained from other classes. These two areas were “employing rhetorical knowledge and using sources and evidence”. On paper, it sounds remarkably simple. Rhetorical context means you think about who your audience is and write accordingly, and proper citation means you reference other people you pulled information from right? Absolutely. What college writing will teach you, however, is these are extremely important areas to consider and develop, and if not accomplished correctly, can severely hinder your writing and your credibility as a writer. There was a bit of apprehension as I opened the folder to look at the feedback provided as I constantly feel embarrassed by mistakes I produce, especially easily preventable ones. I observed the wide range of comments, some favorable, but a majority constructive. I cruised through page to page until I saw a quote that slapped me across the face with how ludicrous a mistake I made. “This summary is identical to the summary of a different source listed on page 4. Obviously, this impacts your credibility with readers”. Summaries were required for each of the sources we selected, and I somehow managed to include the same one for two sources. The lesson here was clear: for assignments I come across as massive as these, it is extremely vital to take all the time needed to confirm my credibility is as rock solid as
