Years have passed since his presidency, and many can argue that America’s educational system has improved, but that still remains to be seen. While it is true that education has gotten more focus in recent years, as highlighted by the “No Child Left Behind Act,” it does not mean that the system is fully developed enough to aid all of America’s children. Now, the average American is just that: average. Children generally receive B’s and C’s, average grades, in school if they are lucky enough to be in a good school system. Literacy rates are lower than they seem, and not enough people are properly motivated to do well in school. Forms of entertainment and parental influence, which also play a large role in the development of children into successful, productive adults, are not where they should be with respects to education. Much more needs to be done to improve the educational system of the entire country. Preschool should be made mandatory to help individuals reach their full potential and achieve what only a minority of today’s society is currently capable of.
As a child development major, students will be able to apply their understanding in critical thinking and scientific methods of thinking learn through multiple courses at California State University of Chico to facilitate the children’s well-being. They will be able to use critical, logical, and empirical reasoning and apply it to their work. They will also be able to use their knowledge gained in class to identify, analyze and evaluate the information, formulate ideas, and rationalize on the issues regarding the children’s well-being and apply to their workplace.

“Developmental appropriate practice” (DAP) is a term used in the educational field for many years. DAP is grounded in the research on child development and learning and in the knowledge base regarding educational effectiveness. In this paper, I will be focusing on the five major guidelines for developmental appropriate practice in the early education field which are: creating a caring community of learners, teaching to enhance development and learning, planning curriculum to achieve important goals, assessing children’s development and learning, and establishing reciprocal relationships with families.

When people hear the term Child Development they automatically think of how the baby is forming inside of the mother. Child Development means so much more than that, it is also the term used to describe how children learn and grow as they age into adults. Another term that is used for child development is developmental psychology (enter in-text citation). The actual definition of child development is the biological, physical, and emotional changes that occur from birth until the end of adolescence. There are many different stages of development, it starts in the womb.
Therefore since child development is a part of psychology, child development is scientific. Like Scientists, developmentalists work with precision, perseverance, and progression. Development is the change in an individual over time. The job of a developmentalist is to examine a person’s progression and behaviors as they age. “Human developmentalists carefully observe the behavior of people of different ages, seeking to catalog how people change over time”(Developmental Psychology, 2014, p.5) Because child development has to do with the change in ages, it requires much time and perseverance just like science. There are many different areas that one must focus on as they are attempting to create a developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children. All of these aspects are equally important to the learning process. Therefore, it is imperative that we as teachers take the process of planning this curriculum very seriously. Not only is it important that we understand the basic guidelines for a lesson plan, we also need to be knowledgeable of the developmental and learning theories as well. These theories will help us to understand the way a child learns mentally and physically. Once we fully understand the concepts of early education we can then take them to the classroom and apply them to our students.
As I plan to eventually work with young mothers who have children who are in the foster care system or who are fighting to get their children back, I want to have a clear understand of what it will take to establish a healthy pregnancy. It will be important to implement the prenatal development to these future mothers. Making sure that these mothers have an understanding of what is important in the first stages of prenatal care of their children. For example, going to Doctor’s appointments, taking vitamins, eating healthy, and staying active. This will help provide a safe and healthy pregnancy for any children they may have. I also believe that gaining knowledge over the stages of development will be beneficial to know for the mothers who are fighting to have their children back. Some of these mothers I could be working with might not know what to expect of their one-year-old child. For example, how their brain is developing, what they should be doing cognitively or socially. As a future family life educator, it will be important that I have a clear understanding of these concerns of the child and the development process for the mothers who have the urge to get care of their children
