Commencement Speech Lin-Manuel Miranda is an American Composer who is worldly recognized for his musical named “In The Heights.” Throughout his life, he’s won a variety of awards which leaves him only one Oscar away from achieving EGOT status. EGOT represents that a person has won all four of the major entertainment awards such as an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. (Liebman Entertainment LLC) Due to the fact of his accomplishments, Miranda was chosen to speak at the University of Pennsylvania graduation in the year 2016. Lin-Manuel Miranda states “ Your stories are essential” encouraging the graduates to go on and share their stories with others. Since adolescents are the future of our country, Miranda intended for the older generation to hear this message convincing the wise folks to pass on their knowledge to young adults. In his speech, he expresses that “Someone will thank you for telling your story because it resonated with their own.” implying that what one is going through someone else has already experienced it. He uses his shoulder cracking as a method of coping with reality and pain, but his back specialist tells him “You’re trying to avoid going through pain or causing pain. I’m here to tell you that you’ll have to survive it if you want to be any kind of artist.” This technique helps everyone think of what is stopping them from fulfilling their dream or what causes them to “crack their shoulder.” it also makes him feel more relatable.
