According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. However, I can manage to learn both ways depending on what kind of information I am gaining and how it is presented to me. I have to be ready to learn and should be somehow interested on the information I am about to receive or in the process of receiving. It is up to the healthcare professionals to assess and evaluate the patient's learning needs and readiness to learn because everyone learns differently. Healthcare is very sensitive industry because human life is attached to it. Barriers during teaching patients or learning for patients might cost life and law suite. For example, if the patient is sick, the probability for the client to have the interest to learn is unlikely. Therefore, I have to ask the patient what he needs and what interest him from other healthcare professional around. By doing so, I can increase the interest of the client/patient to learn the information I am looking to provide him/her/them. Therefore, by gathering important information from the patients how best they prefer to receive the information and involving other health care team on finding out the effective way of the information can be productive are the best way to overcome the barriers of learning in healthcare

Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
The term learning styles is based on the assumption that individuals differ in regards to what mode of instruction is most effective for them. Educational practitioners have long stressed that optimal instruction requires diagnosing these individual styles and designing instruction accordingly. It is based on two fundamental flaws that I give the following rebuttal: 1) there appears to be no credible scientific evidence establishing learning styles exist (Riener & Willingham, 2010), and 2) assuming [1], it must be therefore true that people can learn in a variety of ways outside of one particular learning style. Patient Health Education ties directly into what I wish to do in my professional life. This elective would give me a better understanding of the information and technique’s when referring to patient information. This elective focuses on educating individuals on taking down a patient’s health history. It emphasizes the importance of recording any medication, treatments, and surgeries a patient previously underwent. This elective in my opinion is vital when majoring in the health care field.
To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
It is only by learning the perspective of the patient that doctors can tailor their care to address the hopes of patients. Whilst I do agree that for now, the primary goal for us medical students is to study well and gain the medical knowledge required to diagnose patients, I think that patient skills are vital and should be developed from the start. Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. Learning styles help you better grasp the material and better process it through your brain. When learning you want to do what is most beneficial for you. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.
