Late adulthood is the time period where adults can reflect back on their family, friend, and career lives. During this week’s simulation I had entered the late adulthood stage, which starts at the age of sixty. During this simulation I reflected on my core values, morals, and strengths spiritually, I was promoted in my career, focused on strengthening the relationship I had with my children and granddaughter, and enjoyed the company of my lifelong partner and friends. Although there were some financial issues that scared my husband and I about retirement, I finally quit my job at the age of sixty-seven and lived my life positive and joyful. Elder’s support system can consist of their siblings, children, partners, friends, and caregivers such as nurses. Santrock (2013) explains that having a support system helps elders have a lower probability of depression, institutionalization, and cognitive decline. Studies have also shown that elder’s tend to be more positive with the contact of a small circle of close friends and relatives. If for any reason an elder does not have a support system to help them cope with their aging there are numerous ways they can receive the support. Santrock (2013) explains that when an older adult has social isolation and loneliness it can result in depression and mortality. To help lower the chances of an elder having depression there are nursing homes, group homes, classes, and therapies. This week’s simulation was really interesting to me because I was able to first-hand experience situations that can occur during this time period. I hope to be as content with life as I was in the simulation. The idea of retirement to me is something to be positive about and I hope to one day enjoy it. Since retirement is a lengthy process I will need to make sure I can be financially stable before quitting my future job. Although retirement is a perk of the late adulthood stage, aging is not. Having a healthy coping system is key to being satisfied with life and to help the changes that happen as a person ages.
