As we have already learned about how our body and mind develops through our younger years of life and how important those years are to our development, we will be now taking a dive into the importance of adulthood. The transitional phase of emerging adulthood is very important to ones growth. What is emerging adulthood you might ask? “Emerging adulthood is a time when people continue learning and exploring, postponing marriage, parenthood, and career while preparing for the rest of life” (Berger, 2015, p. 389). This is a critical time for growth due to many of the developments someone will go through. I will be focusing on the aspect of body development throughout the emerging adulthood phase.

Since these hormones are peaking during the emerging adulthood phase it causes “ frequent orgasms, powerful sex drive, erotic responses being joyful, fertility being optimal, miscarriages being less common and lastly serious birth complications being unusual” (Berger, 2015, p. 394). With some of the positive that come with this increased level of hormone production there are also some negative consequences that arise. “The bodies of emerging adults still crave sex” (Berger, 2015, p. 394). Due to the impulse for wanting sex comes with an increased rate of sexually transmitted infections during this time period. “Most men and women in the US about 80% of sexually active people are infected with an STD at some point in their lives. Half of the 20 million new STDs each year are among young people between the ages of 15 to 24. Despite many schools focusing on abstinence-based sex education, it's not necessarily sex that's the problem, but rather, unsafe sex” (Papisova, 2015). Again during this time we emerging adults are continuously exploring and learning, so this one of the consequences we do seem to face. We can’t blame emerging adults as being the only reason as to why there is a higher risk of STI’s. There are also other various reasons for the growing number of STI cases some of the primary reasons …show more content…

“Although, emerging adults bodies are strong and their reactions quick, emerging adults nonetheless have more serious accident than do people of any other age” (Berger, 2015, p. 395). This is unfortunately not due to emerging adults cognitive reasoning but more so due to their hormonal levels fluctuating which sometimes causes a person to make an irrational decision. Some of the risks that are most prevalent during emerging adulthood are “unprotected sex with a new partner, driving without seatbelt, carrying a loaded gun, abusing drugs, and addictive gambling – all done partly for a rush of adrenaline” (Berger, 2015, p. 396). With these risks being most common among young adults, it makes sense that they have one of the highest rates of deaths compared to other age groups. These risks are again related to hormones. During our emerging adulthood we like to explore all the different aspects of life and try to achieve a sense of thrill or some would say adrenaline. This rush of adrenaline is what young adults seek because it gives them a sense of excitation and a feeling of control over their environment. I believe that parents and caretakers have to make a better effort to communicate with their loved ones and explain the risk versus reward. I think with the help of parent we can lower the incidents of accidents among young
