I have decided to put my music into a timeline of when I first heard them and why I have continued to associate them with my life. Each one of these songs have at one point struck me in a way that they remain on my present day playlist. They all bring back specific memories and for most, I can recall exactly what was happening the first time I heard it, or at the very least the emotion I was feeling. I grew up in a very musical environment, as both my parents played guitar and/or blasted their music frequently throughout the house. I often hear songs in public and am taken to a memory of my mom singing it. One of the first songs I remember hearing is Boots of Spanish Leather by Bob Dylan. My mom used to play this song on her guitar all the time and it became a large part of my childhood memory. The Smiths led me to my first self-influenced history lesson as I heard the lyrics “Now I know how Joan of Arc felt” and I was pressed with my ever-apparent question, who is Joan of Arc and why is he singing about her? The question generated a new obsession with Joan of Arc and it truly sparked my young feminist ideals. The House of the Rising Sun has been a regular infatuation of mine from the first time I heard it, to the present. It seems I go through stages where I will forget about the song and then I will listen to it for a month none stop, usually feeling similar to how I feel listening to Bob
