During the following week, some grave changes occurred, for I had a fever, my hunger grew, my height increased, and my temper became volatile. One evening, I slammed out the back door to avoid yet another fight with my mom at the dinner table, and as I paced back and forth through the backyard, grandpa came out to talk to me. While he walked to his favorite seat, his eyes never left mine. “I’m always proud of you, grandson, for you are a fine young man and an outstanding member of this Tribe.” While I glared at him incredulously, wondering at his cause for his praise, all I could focus on was unleashing my anger on someone’s head, preferably Jacob Black. “It’s time.” Standing slowly, he walked back into the house, but did not leave the doorway, watching me through the screen door. As they walked into our yard, I snarled at Sam, my anger increasing. “What do you want?” With my anger so close to the edge, I did not to deal with anyone at that moment, especially Black. As he approached, Sam went straight to the point, directing his words at me. “Quil, leave Bella alone; you’re no good for her.” When Sam’s actions caused me to stop pacing as his statement cut me to the quick, I glared at him, refusing to follow his orders. “No, she’s my best friend and I will not leave her! Why would I ever do that?!” As I sneered my reply, I was unaware that my body was beginning to tremble. At the same time, Black smirked while he stood next to Sam, his arms crossed over his chest like a bodyguard.
