This is just the beginning of endless possibilities that drones present. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the government agency that is regulating drones in the United States. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), are defined by the FAA as: ...an unmanned aircraft and the equipment necessary for the safe and efficient operation of that aircraft. An unmanned aircraft is a component of a UAS. Drone use in the United States should be legal, with regulation, because there are important opportunities for military applications, for saving lives in dangerous professions, and for economic and technological development in the commercial and private drone industries. Surveillance is both more secretive and safe with drones than with manned aerial vehicles. Drones also allow for threats to safety and national security to be taken out with a much greater rate of success and safety. Around 2,500 enemy combatants and known members of terrorist groups have been killed in 473 drone strikes since 2009 (Shane, The New York Times).
