I will be the first to say it; Monsieur Cyrano de Bergerac was a proud man, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Now, in some ways, this particular characteristic of his may have been the reason we’re all here today, honoring this fellow man we have all come to know and love. However, I’d like to take the sense of the word in a different light. He was proud, but he had right to be. This man would do anything for those he loved, even if it meant jumping to his imminent death. His skills were far superior to any and every soldier in the royal army, as well as the fact that he won in a battle of hundred men by himself! His ability to think quickly in the face of danger is how he survived every duel he fought, and this is only a single example …show more content…
of how intelligent he was. Everyone is also very aware of how this man was a poet of remarkable capability.
His daily speech itself was recited so gracefully and beautifully, he would have those around him in tears; whether it be from sorrow or pure hilarity. He fought a man upon the stage in the theatre and constructed an entire ballad to undermine his opponent in a matter of minutes! If that doesn’t show this single man’s poetic genius I have no idea what would! The passion his words embodied was always of the highest degree, as we would expect nothing less from a man of his prowess. His lines, his words, his pure emotion in everything he had ever written or said is displayed exquisitely, as we would expect it to be from a man like …show more content…
him. A man like him… one of wit, intelligence, valiance… and that nose of his (pause for laughter). However, he didn’t let his presumably unsightly features stop him from becoming the miraculous soldier, man, and friend that he was. If anything it fueled him to develop into the best he could possibly be at everything he did. I still remember the day, about 15 years ago, give or take, he stood upon the stage and insulted his own nose for the public’s amusement. They laughed as he went on and on about its horrendous size and stature upon his face, never ceasing to seem offended at all. No, he knew very well about the extent to which his own nose was large. It never phased him, but only because he didn’t allow it to. He was also a man who believed very highly of himself, in every way he could.
Now, aside from the prideful man we know him as, he was very independent, and refused to take the help of others. This may have led to his downfall, refusing the aid when he truly needed help. However he acted like this because he believed he was capable of handling his own issues, therefore refusing other’s assistance when he was asked. In his final year, he always refused the sisters’ offerings for food whenever they asked him. He would go days on end without eating, leaving me to worry about his health when he was not around. Due to this, I was always afraid he would disappear before I had a chance to say goodbye… as I once had not had the chance in my younger years for
another. He really was quite a wonderful man, one whom I continue to wish I’d had the chance to see in a different light than how I had for most of my years. I could have loved him, and I should have loved him when I’d had the chance. Alas, we never had the chance to see reality beneath the horrible situation that we faced. We were hidden behind a façade, that sheltered I from the truth and he from revealing himself, which he had never once desired to do. Even in his last few moments he denied the truth to me, and if I had not known I do not know what I would have done, for I would have been forced to continue loving the wrong man for the rest of my life. Therefore, I will not let myself forget his memory, as he will continue to live on for the rest of my years, as the man I truly and dearly loved.
Cyrano De Bergerac is a perfect example of how many protagonists win our allegiance because his sensibilities will not be denied, because he lives life to the hilt, and because he is a victim of his surroundings. If there was ever a figure who would not be denied his sensibilities, it is Cyrano. When lovers admit, "I'd die for you," it is usually only a figure of speech. Cyrano actually crossed over enemy lines every day simply to mail love letters. He also confessed to her, "My mother made it clear that she didn't find me pleasant to look at. I had no sister. Later, I dreaded the thought of seeing mockery in the eyes of a mistress. Thanks to you I've at least had a woman's friendship, a gracious presence to soften the harsh loneliness of my life. " When Cyrano admits, "My heart always timidly hides its self behind my mind," the reader can instantly relate to this dilemma but it is the fact that Cyrano is able to overcome it that makes him a hero. Not only is Cyrano filled with emotion, but he also goes out of his way to live life to the fullest. Cyrano's introduction to the reader definitely leaves a lasting impression. Not only does he banish an actor from the theater for performing poorly, but he proceeds to recite poetry while dueling with another member of the audience. Every moment of Cyrano's life is filled with action like this. When he was informed that one hundred men were going to kill his friend, Ligniére, he was thrilled with the idea of fighting all these men at once, and, of course, he succeeded. How could anyone not love this man who takes Carpe Diem to its most extreme form? Also, Cyrano is a victim of his surroundings. This may be the one characteristic that completely wins over the reader. Cyrano's most obvious flaw is his grotesque nose, but this would not be so awful if the people around him didn't care.
The first of Cyrano de Bergerac’s numerous admirable qualities is his courage. In the play named after him, Cyrano never backed down from a fight. During his encounter and battle with the Viscomte (Valvert), Cyrano takes on his opponent with confidence and determination, not knowing what he is up against: “It must be eased - it’s getting stiff, and how…/- This comes of leaving it unused. Good Lord!/I’ve got… cramp in my sword!” (1.4.387-389). Another example of his courage is when his friend, Lignière, is nearly ambushed by a hundred men. Cyrano rises to the challenge, exclaiming, "A hundred men, you say? We’ll see you home!” (1.7.556). He fights off the men and creates a safe path for his friend to travel through in order to get back home. Cyrano’s extraordinary courage allows him to do things unimaginably daring by anyone’s standards. His praiseworthy bravery is part of what makes him an ideal role model. At the beginning of the play, in the theatre, the audience gazed as he put on his own show, exhibiting courage and confidence. He received an overwhelming amount of praise for his actions and words, which demonstrates that many people look up to him. Courage is a quality that everyone possesses, but not many decide to exhibit it in public. It enables peop...
Cyrano de Bergerac is set in seventeenth-century France, but written in 1897, after the decline of Romanticism in European literature. Edmond Rostand creates an intrinsically over-exaggerated and satirical romantic hero after the fall of mainstream romanticism by exploring “ … the themes of friendship, duty, sacrifice, communication, beauty and freedom, all ideal elements that would be important to the Romantic structure of the play” (Ledford 100). By rejecting the realist and naturalist movements in favor of positivism and deriving knowledge from emotion and sense perception, Rostand brings to life the unusual hero, Cyrano. Rostand developes Cyrano as an unpragmatic, neo-romantic hero using intertextuality, hyperbolized behavior, and a focus
Andrew: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I am Andrew Denton and welcome to tonight’s episode of Enough Rope. My guest this evening is a woman with quite a story. Her head-spinning memoir, The Glass Castle, graphically captures horrors of the unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing she and her siblings had to endure at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents. However, through the her crazy and wild recounts of her childhood her inspiring strength stands out and has inspired thousands of people whilst sitting on the New York Times Best Seller list for 261 weeks. May we please welcome to the stage, a lady of great courage, resilience and honesty, Jeannette Walls.
“Hero's are ordinary people that make themselves extraordinary”-Gerard Way, a quote that highlights one of the major characters in this comedic drama -Cyrano de Bergerac. Edmond Rostand explores the relationship between our main character Cyrano and how intertwined his actions are with the concepts of heroism and self-esteem. This comedy also dives into the fall of the hero. Through this play we Cyrano is the the metaphorical, and due to the size of his nose, the sometimes literal elephant in the room. His outlandish behavior and his otherworldly wit make him the star of the show. Cyrano is in love with the most beautiful woman in Paris, Roxanne. But she will only fall for
To that end, the swordsman portrays his preference for a modest and dignified life, explaining, “ ‘To be content . . . if neither oak nor elm Not mount high, perchance, but mount alone’ ” (X.XX). No doubt, by promoting such a manner of self-contentment, the poet exemplifies a chivalrous choice in placing a humble and noble existence over a lofty, glamorous, and superficial life. Furthermore, even with his homely appearance, de Bergerac’s chivalric and unfettered demeanor evokes envy in Rostand’s supporting characters, most evident when de Guiche hears of Cyrano’s fate, “ ‘Pity him not! He has lived out his vows, Free in his thoughts, as in his actions free’ ” (X.XX). Aware of the moral standards by which the swordsman lived his days, de Guiche argues no one should feel remorse for the poet’s death as he upheld an enviable and brilliant existence on his own terms. With his commitment to the highest ideals of gallantry, Cyrano fulfills his quest to live an admirable and independent

Thank you for your post Tarkyn it was lovely that you understood so readily, The baby passed away at 16:20 our time, he did not suffered any fits thankfully, he slipped away in Sarah's arms, I promise you, I thanked God for that, however I just could not hold my emotions back, she just loved that broken baby as if it were her own, asking nothing other than the opportunity to show that baby love. I don't know if I can keep doing this, I can't have my heart broken like this and I can't watch Sarah have hers broken either, I have asked the fire and police offices not to report Sarah for climbing into the car, she was not trying to remove the baby she just wanted to let him know someone was there for him, she said he was having trouble breathing and she wanted to check his airway, once she was with him she couldn't leave him, I asked her to say she didn't understand the fireman wanted her to leave the car, innocent Sarah said she fully understood he wanted her to leave the vehicle, however the baby didn't. The manager of the office said he won't act unless he receives an official complaint. if those men put a complaint in I will not be able to contain my rage.
