September 11th, 2001 was the day the United States changed forever. A total of nineteen terrorists hijacked four planes, two of which crashed into the World Trade Towers. The third plane managed to destroy part of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorist attacks killed around an estimated two-thousand and nine hundred people. The nineteen men belonged to the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Unfortunately, due to the severe damage, the two towers collapsed within thirty minutes of each other. The World Trade Center Towers has resulted in the largest emergency service response in United States history. Emergency responders include the Fire Department, Emergency Medical System units, private ambulances, the New York Police Department, and Port Authority police officers. The first to respond to the attack on the first tower hit was a Fire Department operation. Once things became clear that the United States was under attack, many off-duty emergency responders self-dispatched to the scene without orders. The Incident Commander then created a breakdown of the tasks that needed to be taken care of. The tasks included logistics, safety, communications, transportation, triage, morgue, and treatment. In New York City, mass casualty triage is accomplished through the START system – Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment. (Cook, 2001) The system is in place for Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians to triage patients as quick as possible based on three observations: respiration, circulation and mental status.
