Sometimes we get sucked into the world of social media, since social media is a big part of many people’s life. Everyone uses social media differently though. Hobson writes, “Some use it to extend their in-person network, some use it for heated political disagreements, and some use it to just click the like button on puppy pictures.” Social media can be used passively or actively, and depending on what you use social media for, it can lead you to social isolation. Social media leads to isolation because the constant use of social media and being absorbed into it causes you to be more distant, lacking face-to-face communication, and becoming isolated from the real world. Social media can cause isolation in many ways, as it creates virtual substitutes and provides a distraction.
