Credibility Makes a Difference Exemplary leadership begins with a solid foundation. To build a solid foundation in leadership it consists of credibility. Credibility is a characteristic which requires one to be believed in and trust. For a leader to make a difference in the lives of others they need to believe in that leader, as well as, the shared vision (as cited by Bartley, 2017). However, becoming a credible leader is very difficult to obtain. It is a lot easier to gain the compliance of ones’ followers than to earn the respect of being credible. A leader may gain the compliance of their followers through devious acts, or abusing their power. Having these core values as their source can create a strong leader for their group or organization. Combining these core values while also following the statement “do what you say you will do” (as cited by Bartley, 2017) is a way one earns credibility. It is easy to talk the talk, but it is harder to walk the walk. Often leaders can lose credibility by not being consistent with their words and actions. When leaders ask their followers to complete a task or objective, it is important that a leader themselves can complete the same thing. Moreover, do not ask someone to do something that they would not do themselves; therefore, integrity is an important value when earning the credibility as a leader. It is acceptable for leaders to make mistakes, as they too are human, but when they own up to it, being accountable for their actions can aid in establishing credibility. In addition to accountability, education is an important aspect when earning credibility. Continuously pursuing education within their field shows their followers they do not know everything and are willing to do the work necessary to grow and develop as a leader. We had a strong team bond and worked well with each other, which showed during this game. I never once told them something that I would not do, and my teammates listened to what I had to say. When I was coaching my teammates, I do not think I ever directed them what to do, but suggested plays and my team listened to my ideas. As the odds were stacked against us, it was important to remain positive throughout the game. We all wanted to win, therefore, it was important that we were emotionally and mentally focused. As a leader I was challenged, enthusiastic, supported, respected, and motivated by my teammates. I knew we were capable of the win and we just needed the voice to bond everyone together. A lot of people doubted us that game since our coach got kicked out, but we proved them wrong. I truly believe we won because we had a strong team bond and trusted each player knew their role they played. Win or lose we were a team and it demonstrated through this
