Reading is needed in our everyday lives because it can prevent harmful incidents to occur and can trigger readers to imagine and ponder ideas. According to the ABC News, “7 million Americans are illiterate, 27 million are unable to read well enough to complete a job application and 30 million can't read a simple sentence.” Reading is key in our society today because we use communication to exchange ideas and express individual opinions. We read nearly everything from labels, text messages, and the numbers on a clock. An illiterate person may not be able to count out the needed amount of money to purchase an item or know what regulations on a contract they are agreeing to. They limit themselves of the opportunities in front of them. For example, if an illiterate person went to a restaurant and is handed a menu, what would they order? If there are no pictures of the meals provided, they may have someone else order a meal for them or choose something they won’t even enjoy. A literate person in that same situation would be able to choose what kind of food they want and enjoy their restaurant experience much more than an illiterate
