Personal Statement

I have chosen to apply for the BSC Adult Nursing degree for many reasons. As a person I have a strong desire to want to help people. I decided after having my children that I wanted to pursue a career as a Nurse. The role of the nurse appeals to me due to the hands-on care given to the patient whilst applying the knowledge that is built up over time. I find it exciting that I could be on a Geriatrics ward one minute, then quickly transferred to the fast-paced environment of the Accident and Emergency Department the next. When I worked as a Dental Nurse I gained some insight into the role of a nurse. I enjoyed being in charge of keeping the surgery clean and organised and assisting the dentist whilst looking after the patient. Being a dental nurse helped me face my fears in regards to dealing with blood and the disposing of needles which will benefit me when undertaking the duties of a nurse. These experiences have given me the drive to want to be part of helping prevent serious illness when looking after patients. I have learnt to spot the first signs of infection during my experiences along with the signs of breathing difficulties. I feel that those experiences may help me spot similar issues that a patient may present whilst practising as a nurse. Outside of studying my Access To Higher Education Course I am politically active. A matter that I felt particularly strong about, is the termination of funding from Government given to Adult Education provider Learn Direct. As of July 2018 students can no longer study with them. I emailed the Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth regarding the cuts, informing him that this will have a severe knock-on effect on student nurse
