A businessman receives $50 dollars. A businesswoman, with the identical job, receives $39 dollars. According to The White House, women make up about half of the workforce in America and receive earnings of only 78 percent of the pay that their male coworkers make. Equal pay for all has been a topic of controversy for decades. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law, the Equal Pay Act. This act required that men and women be paid equal amounts for equal work. But even with this act signed, the gender pay gap still exists today. In 2014 alone, full-time female workers in the United States earned only 79 cents for every man’s dollar. Women should be receiving equal pay for equal work.
Paying women equally as much as men would benefit many families throughout the United States. According to the Institute of Women’s Policy Research, in four out of ten families,women are the main producer of income. If the gap of 21 percent between the men and women pay gap were closed, more families that depend on women as their main sources of income would have more money to invest on the needs of their families and for everyday spendings. You would think that higher salaries is a product of more education, but today women are earning many more college degrees and still get paid less than men. The Financial Women’s Association says that a successful woman will lose about $530,000 in her lifetime and about a massive $800,000 if you do receive a higher level of education. According to the White House, women are 21 percent more likely to graduate from college and 48 percent more likely to graduate from grad school than men. People spend massive amounts of money to attend colleges and for a higher education, but this is essentially worthless, if in the long run, women aren’t receiving as big of a paycheck as their male
