Introduction
There are two objectives in throughout this case study. The first objective is to know the profile of students speaking and learning skill after the application of the Direct Method. Then, the second one is to describe the effectiveness or the outcome of using the Direct Method in teaching in teaching numbers 1-10 in the Pohnpeian language.
The subject of my case study is a student by the name of Rhonda. Rhonda is a 6th grade student at Pavaiai Elementary school. In school and at home, she is a slow learner. Rhonda, has a special gift, as we call it, she is good with memorization. Her favorite subject in school is spelling, because she knows she excels in it and just by looking at the word, and hearing it, she could be able to

Background of the Problem
English is one of the languages in the world that is used by many people in most countries. This is why the main reason that English has become one of the languages that must be learned in school or giving out instructions. English is also an international language that is used by many people in the world. English may be majority of people’s second language, but English also has a basic skill that must be owned by the language. Language skills must be mastered by listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Speaking skills becomes a reason to measure a person’s skill.
In this case, I will be focusing on speaking skills using the Direct Method. Speaking skill is a language skill that is very important. People are always speaking to communicate, therefore, the first skill is communicating. The second implication involves building the language rather than receiving it. Lastly, in speaking, people do not need to master all of the grammar, they only speak at a basic language to communicate.
In Samoa, people start to learn English either at an early age, or being taught in school. In this case, Rhonda, who learned English in school, has the same problem in speaking. For example, Rhonda sometimes is shy to speak, less self confidence in speaking English, low motivation or afraid in making a grammar mistake. This happens because she is not confident in what she speaks. She is unsure of how to use it and the way to
Proximate Cause: The shoulder and rotator cuff injuries were within the scope of the risks that made us determine that the dropping of Vicky’s body was a breach. Because Dwayne dropped Vicky, Dwayne’s dropping of Vicky’s body proximately caused the injuries sustained. Felix’s carrying of the body was a cause in fact but not the proximate cause of the injuries Vicky
In the case study, Jim Colbert, a third grade teacher, struggles to help a boy named Carlos. This Public School 111 was located in a metropolitan, run down neighborhood. The school was surrounded by drug dealers and trash. However, the inside of the school was bright and welcoming. Here the students were placed according to their abilities, and Jim had a 3-A class for the high achieving students. Jim had a routine that he followed every day. He would take the learning and apply it to the student’s lives with practical examples. To begin the day Jim would go through the homework with the students, and here he began to notice that Carlos was misspelling many of his words. Carlos comprehended the readings, but he was behind in his spelling. Jim talked with the other third grade teacher, Paul, about Carlos. Then, he talked to Carlos about the problem, asking him if he could get help at home. Here Jim discovered that Carlos would get little to no help at home. Jim sent home a dictionary with Carlos so that he could check his spelling, and he saw
In the first assignment of Research Skills (Studio Pathway), we have to explain some terms in research. Every student has to choose 5 terms. 5 research terms that interested me are Case Study, Literature Review, Primary Source, Secondary Source, and Survey.
When a case study is conducted, the researcher conducts an in-depth observation on a particular individual for an extended period of time. While observing the individual, the researcher records their observations which are then translated into case materials that are used to demonstrate a possible problem (American Psychological Association, 2009). Also, as mentioned before, case studies are solely focused on observations of a particular individual. However, even though the word individual is usually used to refer to a person, in this case, it can also be used to refer to a business, school, or neighborhood (Cozby & Bates, 2012).
Basic foreign language skills are important in communicating with people. With new technologies, we can communicate with people who do not speak English. In recent years, the number of people in the United States who do not speak English has also risen. Also, only ten percent of the world's population speaks English. Although one year of a foreign language will not allow students to...
Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby is a character introduced as “passive, security-minded and pragmatic” who lacks the gall to leave her husband for Jay Gatsby. Although she does not own Gatsby, Daisy appears to possess ownership of him as it is argued in, Psychological Politics of the American Dream, that women are treated as commodities traded among men, however this fails to account for the fact that Daisy is equally as manipulative as Tom specifically towards Gatsby. Once the truth about Gatsby is revealed, Daisy beings “drawing further and further into herself” as the illusion of a new, wealthy life with Gatsby is shattered.
William Golding , the author of The Lord of the flies believes that evil resides in all human beings. The Lord of the Flies begins softly but nearing the end everything turns upside down. But would the world be the same way it is today without societal structure and rules? Only through societal structure, rules and order will humans be thought morality/principal and proper behaviour. The Lord of the Flies demonstrates what society would look like/resort to without any rules or guidance for man to follow. Others might believe this is true because of natural evil and actions done by individuals, a comparison through savagery and civilization, and certain truths in the world that are evil.
My reflection was on a group book club which started with going to meet Dina Told, at her home in a living room. Dina helps teach reading and comprehension to children. The project took off as a summer camp in her yard’s gazebo. When it starts getting cold the group goes inside her house. The group sessions changed every month from house to house of members only. Sometimes the group meets at the library, bookstores, and parks. The observation was performed with the approval of each child’s parent that only asked to change their child’s names upon doing this study.
With this, English is becoming more commonly used, not just as a foreign language to learn, but for education, medicine, and even diplomacy reasons. In his essay, when he was talking about the United Arab Emirates, hitching also mentioned that Arabic is their language for school, religion, home, and culture, whereas learning English over there is “symbolic of modernity, work, higher education, commerce, economics, and science and technology” (271). This associates English with a more advanced outlook if one would want to get a higher education or find better work. English is getting a name for itself and it is not a bad name. People are not just learning it for a class, they are learning it for business, higher education, and many more reasons around the world. Julie Traves mentioned in her essay that there are about 380 million people worldwide speaking English as their first language, whereas it is estimated that anywhere from 350 million to about 500 million people speak it as a second language. The English language is spreading throughout the world through education, science, technology, and the culture which is another reason why English is the best language to
Communication skills are defined as the actual act of expressing what a person wants to say both spoken and with gestures. Language skills are defined as the act of understanding and communicating language.Speech skills are defined as the development of a person's spoken word.
A study area is expected to capture the complexity of a single case, and the methodology which enables this has developed within the social sciences. Such methodology is applied not only in the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics, but also in practice-oriented fields such as environmental studies, social work, education and business studies. In the research will try to capture the essence of case study methodology : firstly, by discussing the notions of “case study” and “case”. Secondly, by tracing its history; and finally, by making explicit its most characteristic features. The notions of “case study” and “case”. There are different ideas about what case study is. If try to find a common denominator that case study researchers (Yin 1994; Merriam 1994; Stake 1995,1998; Miles and Huberman 1994; Gillham 2001) might agree on, it would be something along the following lines: The study should have a “case” which is the object to study. The “case” should, be a complex functioning unit, be investigated in its natural context wit a multitude of methods, and must be contemporary.
Social problem is a broad topic, there is “No conclusive idea of what constitutes a social problem.” To define a social problem, there are generally three different ideas to define a social problem, “Something that impacts a large group; Something that the people in a society collective agree it is problematic; Something that violates a moral code.” (Logan) Healthcare has been on the spot light, because of The American Health Care Act. I’d like to present health care in United States as a social problem, because it qualify the three ideas to define social problem. First of all, it impacts a large group in the society, because of its cost. According to CDC, “28.2 million people who are under age of sixty five are insured” (CDC). Second, people in a society collective
During the training, communication skill plays a major role in making my work succeed. I need to use the skill in order to convince my higher up to receive and accept my work. Talk fluently also important in order to make sure our ideas and message to be delivered well. This give me chance to improve my communication skill.
Based on the number of people who use it as a language and its easy nature to learn, English is the best candidate as the global language, which should facilitate communication in the changing environment. This draws the line between English and other languages whose usage is predominant across Europe and parts of Asia. In terms of numbers and effectiveness in learning, English is more superior to other languages.
Today we are all observing an aspect of globalization which is the increasing movement of people from one country to another for different purposes, such as education, desire for a better life, the need for employment, escape from conflicts between groups including oppression of one group by another, or natural disasters. Whatever the reason, while such phenomenon may have a lot of benefits, living in another country affects one’s mother tongue. Keeping mother tongue in a foreign country does not happen spontaneously. Instead, it is an achievement that requires commitment and determination, especially from the family. Parents must establish a strong home language policy and make consistent efforts to help their children develop good
