“The Co-Ed Killer”
This is a bio about a man name Edmund Kemper who would go from just a killer to a stone cold serial killer. Edmund Kemper was born on December 18, 1948 in Burbank, California. He was the middle child of E.E. and Clarnell Kemper. When Edmund parents’ divorce in 1957, Edmund moved in with his mother and two sisters in Montana. Edmund mother was an alcoholic, which made their relationship difficult. When Edmund was just ten years’ old, his mother made him move into the basement because she feared that he might do harm to his sisters. For two college students MaryAnn Pesce and Anita Luchessa it would be their last pickup. Their parents had reported them missing but they would hear anything about their kids until August 15. In Santa Cruz a body was found in the woods, it was the body of Pesce’s, the body of Luchessa’s was never found. Later Kemper would have explained that he had stabbed and strangled Pesce and he stabbed Luchessa as well. He would follow the same routine that he did with Pesce and Luchessa. On January 1973, Kemper picked up Cindy Schall, he shot and killed her. Later he took her to his house and he dismembered her body and threw her body parts into the ocean, where they would wash upon shore, Kemper had buried her head in his backyard. On February 5, 1973, Kemper had got his mother parking sticker so he could do a double murder. Rosalind Thorpe and Alice Liu was the two victims he had in mind that day on campus. He would pick the two up and shot them both, he would then proceed off campus with their bodies. On the way over to burglarize the home, the group of 5 juveniles rode their bikes and stop on the way to feed some ducks, then dumped their bikes in some bushes. At the last minute, two of the five juveniles took off. Leaving behind Kane, who didn’t want to be labeled a scaredy-cat, and 19 year old Alvin Morton and 17 year old Bobby Garner. The group of juveniles expected the house to be empty, but found 75 year old Madeline Weisser, and her son 55 John Bowers were in fact at home.
The TV program “MUGSHOTS” uses the testimony of authorities that worked the case along with interviews with Kemper himself as to what was happening throughout the case from both sides of the story.
On May 21, 1980, Katherine Reitz Brow was stabbed over 30 times in her Ayer, Massachusetts home. There were bloodstains throughout the house and her purse, some jewelry and an envelope where she had been known to keep cash was missing. Investigators found hair, blood ladened fingerprints on the toaster and the kitchen faucet which was left running. A bloody paring knife which was perceived to be the murder weapon was found in the waste basket. Mr. Water’s became a suspect because he lived next to the victim with his girlfriend, Brenda Marsh. He also worked at a local diner that Ms. Brow frequented and employee’s revealed that she had been known to keep large amounts of cash in her home.
The discovery of this crime began as a fishing trip for Chris Henkle, Dee Connors and his two children Sam and Claire on May 5, 2004. While relocating the boat to find better fishing, Connor spotted a suitcase floating in the water. As young Sam opened the suitcase hoping it contained pirate’s treasure, he found its contents to be wrapped in black plastic trash bags. Upon opening the trash bags, Sam exposed two human legs. Shocked at what they had found, Henkle immediately contacted the police. After Master Officer John Runge of Virginia Beach’s Marine Patrol Unit took possession of the suitcase from Henkle and Connors, he looked inside and called his superior asking for a homicide detective. Virginia Beach Homicide Detective Janine Hall joined by senior technician of the Forensics Unit, Steve Stockman, and Dr. Turner Gray, Virginia Beach Medical Examiner, arrived at the scene. The suitcase was photographed, then the body parts were taken back to Dr. Gray’s office for an autopsy. Detective Hall took the Kenneth Cole suitcase to the Virginia Beach police headquarters for forensic examination after the legs were removed for autopsy. July 15, 1999, was an ordinary night for Kristopher Lohrmeyer as he left work at the Colorado City Creamer, a popular ice cream parlor. Kristopher had no idea that his life was about to end. When Michael Brown, 17, Derrick Miller and Andrew (Andy) Medina, 15, approached Kristopher and demanded his money and his car keys. Before the boys knew it shots had been fired and Kristopher was dead. About an hour after the fatal shooting of Kristopher Lohrmeyer, all three men were in custody and telling their version of the night’s events. Michael and Derrick who had run away after the shooting confessed to police and named Andy as the shooter. According to the three boy’s testimony, they had only recently met and needed away to get some quick cash, so they developed a carjacking scheme and headed to Andy’s house to pick up 2 stolen handguns. The three boys were uneducated and had spent most of their time on the streets in search of drugs. The judge ruled that they would be held without bail and there was probable cause to charge them all with first-degree murder (Thrown Away, 2005).
Scott Peterson was an educated man from California Polytechnic State University where he graduated with a B.A. in Agricultural Business. He was married to his wife Laci Peterson who was also pregnant with their unborn son. In December of 2002 Laci Peterson went missing in the Modesto, California area where she shared a home with Scott. Once the investigation of Scott’s missing wife started authorities began to suspect Scott as a suspect in her disappearance. In April of 2003 a fetus and a female torso that was missing hands, feet, and a head were found on the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Bay area was where Scott was boating the day of Laci’s disappearance. The body was later identified as Laci Peterson and the fetus as Laci and Scott’s unborn son. Scott was also arrested in the month of April shortly after the discovery of Laci and their son’s body and was later sentenced to the death penalty. Over the course of this paper I will cover the whole event of the disappearance of Laci Peterson, relating it to a sociological theory, the impact the event had on our society and how the media had influence over this national event.
A serial killer is traditionally defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). The paper will seek to provide the readers with an explanation of how serial killers came to be and how they are portrayed in the media. Several serial killers have a definitive and common personality profile.
If someone ever met Andrew Urdiales he would be the type that one would forget. He is not very outgoing and would keep to himself, during his childhood he did not have many friends and was an average student. Urdiales was a marine stationed in Southern California when he committed his first murder killing Robbin Brandley a twenty-three year old college student. From July 1988 to August 1996 Urdiales would go on to kill seven more women. Most serial killers kill each victim similar to all the other victims, Urdiales was different though his first murder he stabbed the victim to death while his last he shot in the head.
Serial killers have many frightening facets. The most frightening thing about them is that experts still do not know what makes a human become a serial killer. Many experts believe serial killers become what they are because they have a genetic disposition or brain abnormality while other experts believe that a serial killer is created by childhood abuse; and some other experts believe that it is a combination of both brain abnormalities and abusive childhood experiences that creates a serial killer. A murderer is considered a serial killer when they “murder three or more persons in at least three separate events with a “cooling off period” between kills” (Mitchell and Aamodt 40). When defining a serial killer, their background, genes, and brain are not mentioned; perhaps one day those aspects of the serial killer can be included.
Are serial killers born or made? The phenomenon of serial murder has always received a considerable amount attention from both the media and the public, despite the high level of interest, very little known about the serial killers and few theoretical explanations have been of interest by academia (Lee & Choi,2014). Jeffrey Dahmer also known as Milwaukee Monster was an American serial killer and sexual offender through the years of 1978-1991. His victims were usually drugged, raped, strangled and dismembered, his murders also include necrophilia and cannibalism (Purcell and Arrigo, 2006). The first murder that occurs, we do not have the pleasure of viewing, but we know the general gist of the story. Maureen was raped and brutally butchered with a hunting knife and was found in her bedroom, getting blood all over the covers. The next two murders were of Casey Becker and Steve Orth. Steve had his stomach ripped open with a knife and he was strapped to a patio chair with duck tape over his mouth. His intestines had been exposed and there was a pool of blood around the chair. Casey received precisely six phone calls before being gutted, yes WITH a hunting knife, and hung outside in her front lawn from a tree. Principal Himbry, the fourth victim, was stabbed seven times (again with a hunting knife) and hung from the school football goalpost. He was found around the time of Stu's party. The next lucky person was Tatum Riley, Dewey's younger sister and Sidney's best friend (ex). She had her arm sliced by a knife (I'll let you guess what kind) and was found in the garage's kitty door with her head crushed.
A morning filled with shouting and screaming to one another, was the conversation held between a boy and his grandmother. Infuriated with his grandmother, he rushed off searching for the rifle he received as a gift for hunting. The next step was a gruesome decision that would change his life forever. As he held the gun in his hands, he started walking towards his grandmother. She was quietly sitting at the kitchen table working on her latest children book. She turned her head only to witness the frightening view of her only grandson standing angrily in the middle of the floor. He would then dispose the bodies in ravines or bury them in fields. Later in the year, on September 14, Kemper had picked up a fifteen year old girl, who chose to hitchhike rather than ride the bus to her ballet class. She received a mutual fate as those two college girls, however Kemper put the girl’s head in his mother's garden, as some sort of sadistic joke. He later stated that his mom “always wanted people to look up to her”. Kemper ended up killing six hitchhikers or college students from May 1972 to February 1973, all receiving the same acts. He was usually on the prowl after arguments with his mom, which might have been his motive to kill her too. In April 1973, while Kemper’s mother was sleeping, he beat her in the head with a pick hammer. Kemper then cut off her head and raped his mother’s body. Soon after, he used her head as a dartboard and tossed her vocal chords into the garbage disposal. Kemper later said “That seemed appropriate…” because of how his mother had yelled and screamed at him throughout his life. Serial killers are often automatically shrugged off, although it is understandable. Learning about them is not what many people want to do, but it is extremely interesting to learn why they did the things they did. Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, is an example of someone who is unusually interesting. Richard Ramirez is a serial killer who was found guilty of 13 murders, a couple of sexual assaults, and burglaries. He was sentenced to death by California’s gas chamber, but he died in prison in 2013. Richard was a worshiper of the devil, had poor hygiene, and was overall a terrible person. Why and how did he get this way?
