The case study of Jeffrey Dahmer The crime and criminal Are serial killers born or made? The phenomenon of serial murder has always received a considerable amount attention from both the media and the public, despite the high level of interest, very little known about the serial killers and few theoretical explanations have been of interest by academia (Lee & Choi,2014). Jeffrey Dahmer also known as Milwaukee Monster was an American serial killer and sexual offender through the years of 1978-1991. His victims were usually drugged, raped, strangled and dismembered, his murders also include necrophilia and cannibalism (Purcell and Arrigo, 2006). As a child it was reported that Dahmer displayed an interest in dead animals as well as with their …show more content…
Jeffrey then destroyed the body parts, he done this by crushing the bones with a hammer and bleaching his skull (this would then become a regular pattern for the discarded of future victims). Dahmer continued to lure victims into is apartment by offering them money for sex or nude photographs (Stubel,2007). He would then drug his victims, engage in sexual intercourse then kill them by strangulation. Dahmer’s fantasies then progressed into necrosadistic behaviour by 1988 as he would kill his victims then participate in necrophilia sex. He would then mutilate their corpses, Dahmer would also save the remains of his victim’s body parts as souvenirs such as save genitals of victims, scalps and skulls (Purcell and Arrigo, (2006). Collecting these items allowed to him masturbate up to the point of orgasm and relive the paraphilia experience Dahmer reported. Dahmer also engaged in cannibalism as as in his words a way remembering the victim, it was also reported that this was sexually arousing to Dahmer. Over a period of 13 years Jeffrey killed 17 young males all with a similar organised pattern, the case of Jeffrey Dahmer will be assed below aiming to establish reasons for why he committed such extreme
The victim's name was Steven Hicks. Dahmer picked up Hicks hitchhiking and offered to take the hitchhiker to his house for some alcohol. After a while Hicks wanted to leave but Dahmer didn’t want him to leave, so Dahmer hit Hicks in the head with a dumbbell and strangled Hicks with the dumbbell. Dahmer then stripped the corpse of its clothes and masturbated over the corpse. He hid the corpse in the crawl space of his home and dissected the man. Dahmer dissolved Hicks flesh with acid in a toilet and crushed the bones with a sledge hammer. Dahmer scattered the remains outside his home. In 1981, Dahmer was charged with drunk and disorderly conduct. On August 7, 1982 Dahmer was arrested for indecent exposure, he exposed himself to a crowd of women and children. In 1985 Dahmer stated to frequent bathhouses for homosexual sex. Dahmer described his early experiences as frustrating because his sexual partners moved around and would not stay still. To combat his frustration Dahmer admitted sleeping pills to his partners and then he would rape their unconscious bodies. After this incident happening twelve times, the bathhouses banned Dahmer of their use. Dahmer also mentioned an attempt he made to unearth a eighteen year old corpse to use for sexual pleasure, but the soil was to hard to dig, so Dahmer didn’t go through with his plan.In 1986, Dahmer was arrested for masturbating in front of two twelve year old
Dahmer went as far as to dismember and store body parts throughout his apartment after killing them. He would sometimes even eat these dismembered body parts of the body. Some say he went so long without being caught. because he chose the ever shifting population such as drifters and prostitutes. who had no real identity.
“I started having obsessive thoughts of violence intermingled with sex and it just got worse and worse.” (biography.com) These are the words of one of the most notorious serial killers of the twentieth century; Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer committed crimes of murder, rape, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism. He committed seventeen murders over the course of thirteen years, which consisted of mostly young African American males. However, the people who knew Jeffrey Dahmer were entirely unaware of who he truly was. He fooled family, friends, and even law enforcement into thinking of him as just the guy next door. Attempting to understand Jeffrey Dahmer and the heinous crimes he committed involves understanding his childhood and developmental
The question of whether or not man is predetermined at birth to lead a life of crime is a question that has been debated for decades. Are serial killers born with the lust for murder, or are their desires developed through years of abuse and torment? Many believe it is impossible for an innocent child to be born with the capability to commit a horrible act such as murder. But at the same time, how could we have corrupted society so much as to turn an innocent child into a homicidal maniac? Forensic psychologists have picked apart the minds of serial killers to find an answer as to what forces them to commit such perverse acts. Their ultimate goal is to learn how to catch a serial killer before he commits his first crime.
To begin, it is often said that all serial killers are born with the aggressive or violent gene but that’s not necessarily true. Nature versus Nurture has always been a huge argument in the psychology community. Nature is described as the genetic code of a person. For example, it is often argued that genetics is the cause of obesity or high blood pressure. Nurture is the complete opposite. Nurture is where the environment determines who a person is and what they will become. An example would be that poor eating can cause obesity and limited coping skills can lead to high blood pressure. Almost everyone knows the story of Jeffrey Dahmer. He is often seen as this monster who got a kick out of eating the remains of his victim. You see, Jeffrey wasn 't always this way. Jeffrey Dahmer was born May 21st, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jeffrey Dahmer lived what you could consider a “normal” life up until his family began to move around from state to state causing him to
Why does a Jeffery Dahmer happen? How does a person become a serial killer, necrophiliac, cannibal and psychopath? There are probably very few convincing answers that come forth.
Jeffrey Dahmer is an American serial killer who was obsessed with the idea of death and killed adult males. Some people say that he grew up with a part of him missing (Jenephyr) . Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and his killings occurred in Bath, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Jenephyr). “He had difficulty making friends and was a loner who was fascinated with death, bodies, flesh, and taxidermy. He had a collection of roadkill and insects preserved in chemicals. Dahmer was also fond of impaling the heads of animals on stakes and mounting the bodies on trees behind his house” (Jenephyr). Dahmer had trouble making friends and was shy around peers, especially females (Jenephyr). He would even seek attention by faking seizures and other bad behavior (Jenephyr).
The obstacles we go through in life and how we react to them defines us. Likely, the environment, especially the home environment, plays a very big role in the development of a serial killer. Usually most serial killers have gone through some sort of childhood trauma which later on results in their acts. Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer who was a quiet, shy man and had committed several murders on young boys and men. Jeffrey Dahmer’s father was an engineer and his mother would usually suffer from psychotic breaks, depression and sucidal thoughts. His father was never emotionally present and his mother was too self involved with her diseases. Dahmer made no connection with a person he trusted. Dahmer was constantly bullied at school and he was so lonely that he once bought a mannequin that he would lay next to when his parents were not home (Martens, 2011). As Maslow would say his need to belong was not met at home or at school. Negative childhood traumas increase the likelihood of psychotic tendencies in adulthood. It is not shocking that he found solace in the sense of being powerful by killing
Serial killers have many frightening facets. The most frightening thing about them is that experts still do not know what makes a human become a serial killer. Many experts believe serial killers become what they are because they have a genetic disposition or brain abnormality while other experts believe that a serial killer is created by childhood abuse; and some other experts believe that it is a combination of both brain abnormalities and abusive childhood experiences that creates a serial killer. A murderer is considered a serial killer when they “murder three or more persons in at least three separate events with a “cooling off period” between kills” (Mitchell and Aamodt 40). When defining a serial killer, their background, genes, and brain are not mentioned; perhaps one day those aspects of the serial killer can be included.
Excerpt from "I Have Lived in the Monster" Robert Ressler: So you were aroused at just the physique? Dahmer: The internal organs. Jeffrey Dahmer was creating very disgusting acts to men some were even under the age of sixteen. He would pick them up and take them back to his house to take “pictures”. He would then give them alcohol that he drugged. The victims could not even speak clearly so there for they could not protect themselves from Dahmer. Dahmer killed a variety of people from different racial backgrounds. He also practiced necrophilia and cannibalism.
Jeffrey’s influence to kill was quite the awkward one. As we look closer into his middle school years, Dahmer has an attraction to men only. The thoughts of gay sex turned into fantasies of violence and dismemberment of the sex partner. After starting theses thoughts, they became constant. They became worse and worse everytime. The thoughts of intermingled sex confused him.
Are serial killers born with the need to kill, or is it something that they learn to do as they grew up? There are many theories as to why people become serial killers, but most are associated with the Nature vs. Nurture Theory. Many side with the nurture theory believing that serial killers are created from horrible childhood traumas like unstable households and abusive parents. While other people choose the opposite side of the spectrum: biological factors. Psychologist try to examine the brain of a serial killer through the use of MRI scans, conversations, and genetics in order to find abnormalities in the brain. Whichever side of the theory one may take, one has to be aware that not all serial killers are the same. Serial killers are separated into three or more different typologies: psychopathic sexual sadist, visionary serial killer, and the mission serial killer (Miller, Part I, 2013).
Jeffrey Dahmer is not typical serial killer, because he didn’t have physical or sexual abuse in childhood and lower socioeconomic background which represent conventional serial killers. Professionals can not signify reasons enough to explain his several murders, since he was associated with all the elements of serial killer. Not like other serial killers who murder victims and move on to search new victim, his fantasies led him to commit a series of crimes against the dead body. He also liked to keep all the part of victims’ body including brains and skulls in freezer. He sometimes ate them and took advantages of them. The most interesting was he didn’t look like an assaulter or a violator, even he said he didn’t like violence. However, he couldn’t have any kind of relationships with person who was alive.
Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee on the 21st of May, 1960, to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. From a very young age Jeffrey was a normal young boy who showed no signs of any mental problems. At a very young age Jeffrey began to develop an interest in dead animals when his father found a number of dead animal bones while sweeping under the house. This didn’t affect the way he behaved until when he started going to preschool. Whilst attending preschool Jeffrey was seen as a very shy boy, at the same time his interest in animals began to grow.
“At least seventeen persons[sic], mostly gay and black men, were known to have been murdered by Jeffrey Dahmer from 1988 to 1991. Dahmer cannibalized his victims, had sex with their corpses, and then dissolved them in a fifty-five-gallon vat of acid in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin, home” (“Serial Killers” par. 2). Dahmer committed such heinous and brutal killings that can hardly categorize him as human. Unfortunately, he is not alone; there have been by far more hideous murders over the past century. Serial killers like Dahmer are becoming more common in that they could be considered an epidemic. Many have questioned how these individuals become serial killers, some say they are a result
