Scott Peterson was an educated man from California Polytechnic State University where he graduated with a B.A. in Agricultural Business. He was married to his wife Laci Peterson who was also pregnant with their unborn son. In December of 2002 Laci Peterson went missing in the Modesto, California area where she shared a home with Scott. Once the investigation of Scott’s missing wife started authorities began to suspect Scott as a suspect in her disappearance. In April of 2003 a fetus and a female torso that was missing hands, feet, and a head were found on the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco Bay area was where Scott was boating the day of Laci’s disappearance. The body was later identified as Laci Peterson and the fetus as Laci and Scott’s unborn son. Scott was also arrested in the month of April shortly after the discovery of Laci and their son’s body and was later sentenced to the death penalty. Over the course of this paper I will cover the whole event of the disappearance of Laci Peterson, relating it to a sociological theory, the impact the event had on our society and how the media had influence over this national event. The Event Scott met Laci when they were both attending California Polytechnic State University in 1994. They dated for a while then decided to move in together and get married in 1997. They moved to Modesto, CA to be closer to Laci’s family where Scott spent his days selling fertilizer and Laci as a substitute teacher. Laci found out she was pregnant in 2002 with Scott’s baby but Scott was not so thrilled. Scott felt overwhelmed and that a baby would cramp his style. In the midst of what was going on at home Scott was looking for an outlet that didn’t remind him of home and started ha... ... middle of paper ... ...announcement that she was indeed dating Scott but had no knowledge that he was married and that she was not a suspect in the investigation. Laci’s Parents had turned on him once this came to the light. Police were going to treat Laci’s disappearance as a homicide but on April 13 of 2003 a couple spotted what looked like a male fetus. On the next day a pregnant woman washed up in the same area of the male fetus in the Berkeley Bay. Forensic scientists confirmed that the fetus and the woman was Laci’ and her and Scott’s son with matching DNA. On April 18, 2003 Scott was arrested at gun point. Police felt as though Scott was trying to flee to Mexico because he had dyed his hair and grown a goatee and had $15,000 in cash, survival gear and his brother’s ID. It took the jury seven days to reach a verdict of the death penalty. Scott Peterson is now sitting on death row.
The Lindbergh child child case was heard all around the world. This happened seven years after the “Monkey Trial” and a half century before the famous O.J Simpson case. When the news of Charles Lindbergh Jr. kidnapping, a media craze broke out and the world was in shock. This case attracted more journalists and reporters than World War I had many years ago. At first demanding $50,000 and then rising up the ante to $70,000 which made front-page headlines and news around the world. There weere many hopes and prayers that the Lindbergh baby was alive and well, But all those hopes, were crushed two months after little Lindbergh was found. Reports say a small child's body was found a few miles from the their mansion. The body was badly decomposed; on the left leg their was nothing below the knee and same for the left hand. The right arm had been chewed off by what seemed to be a pack of dogs or wild
The Casey Anthony case was one that captured the heart of thousands and made it to the headline of national TV talk shows, newspapers, radio stations and social media networks for months. The root of the case was due to a clash between the parental responsibilities, the expectations that went with being a parent, and the life that Casey Anthony wanted to have. The case was in respect to the discovering the cause of Casey’s two-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony’s, death; however the emphasis was placed on Casey and her futile lies, which resulted in a public outcry. The purpose of this essay is to delve into the public atmosphere and inquire about why the media and social media collectively attacked the case by uncovering the content of the case, the charges that were laid, and later dismissed, the “performers” of the trial and the publics reaction. It will further discuss how it defies universal ideologies and how the media represents this. The discussion of the complexities of the case and its connotations will incorporate Stuart Hall’s Representation and the Media, Robert Hariman’s Performing the Laws, What is Ideology by Terry Eagleton, The Body of the Condemned by Michael Foucault, and a number of news articles, which will reveal disparate ideas of representation in the media, and the role of the performers of the law and their effect on the understanding of the case.
The tragedy that happened in Newton, Connecticut swept the world with a variety of emotions. Many individuals became angry or saddened by the tragedy. I think more of the individuals were angry of what happened to those 20 innocent children. Parents send their children to school thinking that they are safe but in this case ended in tragedy. I am going to discuss similarities and differences between two articles. I am also going to discuss how this shooting is a symbolic crime, how likely policy changes will be enacted and how unlikely they are to be enacted.

On December 24, 2002, Laci Peterson was reported missing from her home. Her husband, Scott Peterson, was the first to be suspected for the murders of Laci and her unborn son, Connor. Scott planned the murders by making sure he was at a certain place at a certain time to prove that he didn’t do it. The night Scott came home from fishing, he reported Laci was not at home.
From the murderer and the victim’s family’s perspective, the family is now broken into pieces and puts pressure on the dad to carry on life without a wife because of his son. This tragedy perfectly demonstrates how bad parenting negatively affects children’s health physically, mentally and socially. On the other hand, from a broader perspective, this would cause greater tensions in the country over the topic of illegal immigrants, and continue to stir fear and anger in the little brains of mindless Trump supporters, who constantly complains about the ‘harm’ of illegal immigrants in the United
This stage is an examination of potential jurors to ensure a fair trial for the defendant. Ideally, voir dire will result in an impartial jury for the trial of the accused. On March 4, 2004 jury selection began for the trial of Scott Peterson. Nearly 100 potential jurors began answering questionnaires about their views on the death penalty and their opinions on extramarital affairs. The nearly 30-page questionnaire given to prospective jurors also included questions as whether they read Field and Stream, what stickers grace their car bumpers and whether they have lost a child. On April 14, 2004 Judge Alfred A. Delucchi dismissed an unidentified Redwood City woman after a brief meeting in his chambers. Defense attorney Mark Geragos two weeks early had accused the retired secretary of bragging to her friends on a bus trip to Reno, Nevada, that she has "passed the test" to get on Peterson's jury and that Peterson was "guilty as hell" and would "get what's due him." May 28, 2004 six men and six women were selected for Scott Peterson's murder trial all said they would be willing to sentence him to death if they convict him of killing his wife and the couple's fetus.
The case of the State of Florida vs. Chad Heins happened in 1994 in Mayport, Florida. It was on April 17, 1994 that Tina Heins, who was pregnant at the time, was found stabbed to death in her apartment. She shared an apartment with her husband Jeremy Heins and Jeremy’s brother Chad Heins. At the time of the incident Jeremy Heins was on a ship because he worked in the navy but Chad Heins was at the apartment. Before the incident happened Chad Heins, the defendant, who was nineteen at the time, used his brothers license to buy alcohol at a strip club near the apartment. After that Chad Heins had went to another bar where his brothers license got confiscated. He left the bar around 12:45 a.m. and went back to the apartment. He then washed his
The Impact of the Dred Scott Case on the United States The Dred Scott Case had a huge impact on the United States as it is today. The Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments have called it the worst Supreme Court decision ever rendered and was later overturned. The Dred Scott Decision was a key case regarding the issue of slavery; the case started as a slave seeking his rightful freedom and mushroomed into a whole lot more. 65
The summary of this case is that Nancy Grace, a television (TV) journalist, former prosecutor, and TV host had caused outrage after one of her interviewees, Melinda Duckett, committed suicide the day after the interview. That interview, and several other reasons, were believed to be the factor that drove Melinda to take her own life. In that interview, Nancy asked Melinda, the mother of missing child Trent Duckett, many insensitive questions in a very aggressive and interrogative manner, seemingly in hopes of getting a public confession (Broughton,
Can you imagine your child, the one who you set up playdates and buy things for because you love him or her, will turn out to be a mass murder? Perhaps, what is like to live with a person who you later find out to have hatred towards the world and humanity? Unfortunate, the surreal and unimaginable tale would unravel for the Rodger family on the tragic day May 23, 2014. Elliot Rodger, the son of Hollywood filmmaker Peter Rodger, went on a rampage that left three of his roommates stabbed to death, three others shot dead, and 14 innocent by-standers injured in Isla Vista, California. The event left many people traumatized, no one would have expected that Rodger can carry out the execution of innocent people, but while searching investigators
“Following Footsteps of a Killer.” New York Post (Nov. 2002): 124: Proquest. Web. The Web.
In the report “Who could kill a child?” the two journalists produced a web based article which is easily accessible for its viewers on their mobile phones and tablets. It also uses short paragraphs which are well-organised so it is easy to read. The article also uses media to further convey the message of ‘who could kill a child’ by including three photographs of young filicides that have occurred in South Australia. This is done to make readers emotional and remorseful about the events that have taken place. Although The Advertiser has been published as a daily publication on South Australian’s tragedy which has generalised a huge focus. The journalists have also used many photographs in this article to capture the reader’s attention. They have used many pictures including one from the car being pulled out of the water, a family photo, a photo of the two boys, the brother of Damien Little visiting the growing memorial sit at Port Lincoln wharf and many more. These have all been used to make the reader feel something from the incident that has
