Imagine if East Jordan high school offered several elective and AP classes to students. Imagine how it could benefit the students of East Jordan Public schools. It would offer much more to students. East Jordan high school use to have many elective classes like: Forensics, Environmental sciences, Creative writing, honors biology, and advance writing, but now the high school does not offer enough elective and AP classes. East Jordan high school must add more classes because they help with schedules, college, and preparedness.
For one, East Jordan high school needs to add more classes because of scheduling. More classes adds variety. It gives students many more classes to chose from. EJMHS needs to offer more than just Physical Education, BAMO, Woods, Autos, AP English, AP History, and AP Biology. Students wouldn't have to take classes they don't want. Elective classes can help with life skills. Cooking classes or home-ec are classes that can teach students life skills to use later.. They are skills that can be valuable to some career choices. Also, students can learn what they would want to become for their careers. If a student takes a class like Law and Justice, they can learn whether it is something that interests them or not. With more elective classes it would give more of these opportunities to introduce different career clusters to students. They would know their passions. Many time students go to college thinking they know their career, but more classes could expose students to more job opportunities. It wasttes money when students change their career in college because they have to take additional classes and some of the classes they took wont be helpful in their new decision to change careers. Dual enrollment “increases students’ confidence in their ability to perform in college” (An 58). The influence of how many credit hours someone can get while taking dual enrollment courses is also another reason many are motivated to go to college. They have a sense that they can finish college earlier than other people. Students can take as many dual classes that are offered at their school, which will make them want more since they have already started their journey through the college life in high school. Taking Dual enrollment classes help some people find that they are confident in their ability to complete college work. Some people believe that it is detrimental because it will exhaust the students and it will affect their extracurricular activities outside of school. Imagine walking down the hall of a crowded high school. Most of the students there do not envision how well school prepares them for college. Teenagers have few cares in the world! A vast majority takes the bare minimum amount of courses needed to fulfill school requirements. These graduation prerequisites usually do not come close to adequate, and rarely exceed sufficiency. Should high schools change current curriculum to better prepare students for college? The answer is simply, "yes." Consideration of why and how holds the key to solving America's problem.
Secondly, college is where a person goes to discover him/herself. This is one of the many goals of the college system, and that discovery process is hindered by unneeded, mandatory classes. Students should be able to try many different classes to discover what interests them the most, not to be fed knowledge that they very well might know already (and is perhaps of no interest to them). If required courses were eliminated, it would free up much time that students could then use to pursue their own interests. College exists to help people become unique individuals, not to put every person into the same standard mold.
Having a more balanced high school curriculum, with more options for the students, would also allow students to narrow their focus on a particular field or subject, while preparing them for their major in college. It would even boost the confidence of the student body, and therefore boost the test scores as well. In addition, students who have trouble recognizing their talents, might be able to have a more fulfilling high school experience.
