Madison Ngo ELA P. 5 09/20 Divergent For my book report, I read the fiction book called Divergent by Veronica Roth. Divergent means to be different or diverse from the rest of society. In this book, a young Abnegation girl named Beatrice is different from the rest of society and doesn’t fit in any of the factions. Tris is considered Divergent, which means she is more than one faction. A faction is based on their aptitudes and value. The different factions are Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Erudite the intelligent, Amity the peaceful, and Candor the honest. In the story, Divergent are considered to be outcasts because they are different from the rest and don’t belong anywhere. In chapter three, Beatrice must take an aptitude test to see which faction she belongs in because when they turn 16 they must choose which faction to live in. After the test was over, Tori, her test administrator, told Tris her results. She had told that she didn’t belong in just one faction, but three: Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. When it is her turn, she chooses Dauntless. In chapter thirty-three, Erudite take control over all Dauntless to kill all Abnegation to retreat secret information. When they are in the Abnegation sector, Eric, Dauntless commander, realizes Tris is Divergent and threatens to kill her. Luckily, Four (Tobias), her boyfriend, saves her and tries to escape. However, within seconds, Erudite soldiers surround them. When reading this chapter, I realized that both being Divergent and being different always has its cons like being outcast. In the end of the book, Tris overcomes a simulation and she finally escape Erudite’s leader, Jeanine, from her clutches.
