Divergent by Veronica Roth is an exciting science fiction and thriller with a quickly moving plot that builds an exciting tone, and a point of view that is told through Tris in a unique way since she is like no one else in the story.
First of all, in order to have an interesting story you will have to have a tone of voice that contributes equally to the meaning of the story. According to Divergent, “I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.” This quotes supports the idea that Tris can in fact fit into all factions and therefore is divergent. Tris, faces with this conflict of being divergent since it is looked down upon. But, even though she faces this serious situation, she has a strong and powerful mindset throughout the journey. The tone in this quote contributes to the story because it supports the idea of not being afraid and moving on. It sets the mood for the readers, making it more interesting to them. Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. As a result of this sudden change, Tris misses her caring family. However, Tris doesn’t mourn and drown in self-pity. Instead,
Utopia seems like a wonderful idea where everything is perfect and no one suffers. Three stories address this topic and show how even the best ideas have their downside. The Giver tells of a society where everything is the same and no one has to worry about making a wrong decision. Fahrenheit 451 tells of a society that bans book in the interest of preventing unhappiness. The society in Logan's Run is full of pleasure but only for 30 years. In practice though, these utopias present each of the protagonists with a problem where they question how perfect their perfect worlds really is.
This was from the mind of young Grealy, the girl who had a depressed and angry mother, the mother that taught her that it was never okay to show weakness or cry (Grealy 30). Young Grealy believed that the way she earned acceptance during her first visit to the ER could carry over into her home life. I think that this moment encompassed all that Grealy was feeling at this time. The feeling that she was responsible for her mother’s unhappiness and depression, the feeling that if she showed she was not afraid, no one else in her family would be either, and the feeling that if she was not brave, her family would be unhappy forever. This was important because she felt that she had discovered a way to make her family whole again.
In the poem, Guest creates this serious tone to display the importance of courage. Additionally, he states that there is more to being courageous than what is commonly recognized. “Courage is more than a daring deed: It’s the breath of life and a strong man’s creed” (Guest 31-32).
Divergent was officially released in October 2013- as well as the other books. The plot is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice in which the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago- where Veronica currently lives- that is separated into 5 groups called factions ( Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless). Tris is Abnegation-born but takes an aptitude test where she chooses to become Dauntless. Because she is Divergent (consisting of Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite), she must keep it a secret from her Dauntless leaders to protect herself from being hunted down...to her death. Both in The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and Watership Down by Richard Adams, the authors deal with the topic of courage and each share a similar view on it as this quote. Indeed, both authors suggest that courage is not accumulated simply by acts of heroism, but rather by overcoming fears and speaking one’s mind as well. To be courageous you cannot be deterred by possible outcomes that may involve danger or pain. To be courageous you have to be more than brave you have to be undaunted and have a heart of a lion. Through Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird courage and determination are embedded through the character’s actions. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, explains to his son Jem, “I wanted him to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see if through no matter what.(Lee 149)” Through this quote Harper Lee is trying to convey that, real courage is more than appearance it is a significant action
She is successful and ranks first. She slowly realizes that in the excitement of the day, the Dauntless leaders have again exercised their power by injecting a serum in members to fight Abnegation for them. This again shows the corruption of total power in society leaders. Realizing the control over fellow Dauntless members tris gets Four and they set out to reverse the serum and fight the simulation. The story continues in Roth’s second book of the Divergent Trilogy Insurgent. Four explains to Tris that he 's never had love in his life,from his father who beat him or his mom who “died” when he was younger or in dauntless when he transferred factions at 16, he was alone, he was small and scared until he realized he could fight and become a major factor in the dauntless community,not just a stiff from abnegation. When he first saw Tris he saw a little of himself, a small brittle stiff who would have to work harder than anyone else to stay alive. He imprinted himself on her as a trainer and protected her as much as he could until he fell in love with her. Their love is true. Four takes Tris from her room so they can finally see each other, Evelyn, Fours mother, doesn 't approve of them being together so they must sneak around to see one another.
Tris finds out about how Four only has four fears and that his aptitude test was for abnegation, but he chose dauntless as his faction. “He says, ‘I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily” (Roth, pg.336). It illustrates that even though Tris is struggling with the identity of having or not having divergent in her life, it looks like Four is struggling with the exact same thing. The universal theme of when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you care about. This applies to everyone because many people are confused on where they belong or who they are, so they just need a little reminder. This situation relates to the universal theme because Tris and Four don’t know where they belong in and who they are as a person. The words “selflessness,” “bravery,” and “danger” has a positive connotation and implies that the author is trying to say that to find where you belong to is a hard thing to do and it might be difficult along the way, but at the end it's worth it because you find who you are.. When Tris was still figuring out who she is, with the help of Four she figured out that having many factions is ok and being divergent is unique. The universal theme clearly shows that when you are struggling to find yourself or where you belong in, it’s best to welcome people to help you figure it
The five factions in Divergent’s serve as values that citizen can aspire to achieve in their fullest. The fearless are drawn to Dauntless, the intelligent to Erudite, the kind to Amity, the honest to Candor, and the selfless to Abnegation. I do not think that only these factions represent every basic personality type, nor fulfill all of people’s basic needs. To fill in the gaps, I would create factions for the selfish and manipulative, among others.
I predict that Tris will discover that Four is also a Divergent, and they will start a rebellion together at the end of this book and beginning of the next one. I think that Four is a Divergent because of how he knew quite quickly that Tris was a Divergent. He didn’t have to scrutinize her he discovered it with ease. There is a central government that is in control of all these people who are separated into different groups. This same government can do whatever it pleases and the people have no say in what the government can and cannot do. In Divergent, the Government tries to use mind control to get its army to kill innocent people. It was up to people like Tris to stop the government from continuing to carry out the meticulous plan.
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
