“Between 2000 and 2011, distracted walking led to more than 11,000 injuries in the U.S.” Distracted walking has become a serious and dangerous problem in the United States. Some people think the solution is to make it illegal. Others think that people should just use common sense. In the article, “Would You Ban Texting and Walking?” writer from Scope Magazine, Kristen Lewis, states the facts. Therefore, texting while walking should be illegal. Texting while walking puts citizens in extreme peril. For example, in 2014 a fourteen year old boy walked off of a bridge and got seriously injured. Of course, he wasn’t paying attention to where he was going because he was on his phone! Phones are an extreme distraction that puts a lot of people at risk for this type of injury Secondly, traffic deaths went up 6% nationwide in 2016. This means that the number of pedestrian deaths went up too. It seems to be that since the better iPhones were released, the number of traffic deaths increased significantly. Kristen Lewis says, “They conducted research, circulated petitions, and testified before the city council.” Thanks to them, last October, Honolulu became the first United States city to pass a law against texting while walking. Finally, some communities are trying to make their traffic areas more “walkable” as said in National Safety Council’s article “Take Steps to Avoid Injury While Walking”.
