I believe that personality can change over time. This I believe, because I don’t think that anyone ever grows up and doesn’t change at all. For example, when I was young, I was extremely reserved, anxious, and stringent, but now, in my senior year of highschool, I have become more relaxed, but serious, and I still am quiet and introverted, but to a lesser extent than I was before. I have also become much more focused and more mature than I was just a few years ago, which is all because of the curriculum here at my school. I have also seen people I know change over the years as they grow older and mature. I've also witnessed close friends change as we've grown up over the years. My close friend Nick used to be a flamboyant, go-with-the-flow kind of kid, but now as he entered his senior he has become more mature, responsible, and more caring than he

This has been, because he has been working for the past four years, since he pays for almost everything he has, and also because he has been in a steady relationship for 3 years and has learned to be more caring to everyone since then. Another person I've seen grow is my sister. My sister used to make really bad decisions in high school and she was really impulsive, and didn't think her decisions through. Over these past few years, she's become more mature and has started to really start thinking long-term with all her decisions, so she can be prepared to live on her own. All the times I have noticed someone who has changed over time, the change usually always stems from more responsibility and a need to start preparing for their own future. I also see that people change because of relationships they have been in, which can often change how someone acts
A layman would define personality as an individual’s characteristics in terms of how they think and behave. Many theorists, however, interprets personality differently resulting in various personality theories. Personality is determined by traits which are behaviours displayed by a person in most given situations. How a person reacts to common circumstances may also be used to foresee future behaviours. Traits are then categorized into types that allow easier comparisons to be made between each individual’s attributes. The focus of this paper would be on the biological aspects of personality whereby traits are thought to be inheritable through genetics and associated with the central nervous system. Behavioural genetics are research that makes use of results from studies done on family, twins and adoptions. The findings of how both genes and environment influences personality from the studies will be discussed. Some researchers found possible issues with the representativeness of such studies. The outline of Eysenck’s biological model of personality and arousal, Gray’s BAS/BIS theory and Cloninger’s biological model of personality will further explain the biological effect on personality.
Personality-This are characteristically patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that makes a person to be unique from other individuals. It mainly consists of who you are, who you have been and what you will become. There are a number of different theories that have emerged to explain different aspects of personality. Some focus on explaining how personality develops while others focus on individual differences in personality. According to Freud, the mind is divided into the conscious mind which is composed of all things we are aware of and the unconscious mind which has things we are not aware of. He also goes on and divides the human personality into: the identity, Ago and the superego. He terms the Identity as the most primitive part and it’s the source of all the basic wants. It is generally unconscious and hence serves as the main source of libidinal energy. Ego component focuses on reality matters and ensures satisfaction of the identity in a realistic manner that is safe and socially accepted. The superego component holds internalized behavior and standards we learn from the surrounding environment like our parents and society. Freud came up with four stages of psychosexuality: Oral, Anal, Phallic and Genital. At each stage different parts of the body are able to produce pleasure hence they serve as the main source of pleasure, frustration and self-expression. If at all a conflict remains unresolved at any particular stage, the individual might remain fixated at that particular point of development. A fixation can involve an overdependence or obsession with something related to that phase of development. When a person is considered to have oral fixation is one who stuck in the oral stage of development him/her posse’s...
Many psychologists have performed examinations over personality for many decades. With a vast amount of theories behind the meaning of personality, there still is no true explanation to why we are who we are. Some would argue that our personality is inherited and passed down through birth, whereas some theorist believes one’s personality is altered by life events and choices. I find it hard to grasp the idea that personality travels through the gene pool. I believe that personality changes frequently, in the sense that we adapt to our environment. Our surroundings, actions, and decisions all play a role in developing a personality. For example, a child that grew up in foster care might show signs of aggression or depression, whereas a child
Kaviani & Hatami (2016), analyzed primary research information for a correlation between personality traits and mindfulness. In this report, mindfulness is defined as paying attention to every action, and showing the ability to change (Kaviani and Hatami 2016). Personality traits reviewed in this study are: empathy, Theory of mind, openness, pro-social behavior, and suggestibility. A questionnaire focusing on all five of the listed personality traits and mindfulness, were given to a group of 275 participants. It was found that those with a high mindful rating, correlated with the listed traits to a higher degree than those in with low mindful ratings (see Appendix A for chart). There were two classifications of mindfulness (low and high mindfulness).
There are many factors that make your personality. One that is usually overlooked is birth order. Scientists have given traits to every child based on when they were born and most of them are correct. In The Birth Order Book by Kevin Leman stated,” Your birth order-whether you were first, middle, or later in the family-has a powerful influence on the kind of person you will be, the kind of person you will marry, the type of occupation you will choose, even the kind of parents you will be.” (3). Birth order is what makes someone who they are; these characteristics apply to almost every child depending when they were born in their family, but in rare cases, the child doesn’t act like the personality given to them by science.
Over time, some aspects of personality change, whereas others remain stable. For example according to Costa and McCrae 's study on adult personality, in early adulthood, neuroticism decreases, openness to experience increases and in middle adulthood agreeableness increases.
Personalities differ greatly from one person to another and there are many theorists with different theories of why people act the way they do. The first few stages of a person’s shape their entire personality and how they are going to be for the rest of their life and that is very important. The development of a person has to do with who their parents are, how they are rasied, their environment, etc. and that is very crucial. Every person acts the way they do for a certain reason and that it showed by many theories throughout time.
Carl Rogers was heavily influenced by phenomenology which is the philosophical movement that maintains that everyone exists in the center of a phenomenal field (Engler, 331). In this context phenomenal is use in reference to its Greek root which means “that which appears or shows itself.” Using core concepts from this movement Rogers built his personality theory around the phenomenal field or the total sum of experiences consisting of everything that is potentially available to consciousness at any given moment (Engler, 331). Rogers believed that individuals responded to the phenomenal field in various ways and he focused on how the individual’s perceptions of reality impacted their behaviors. Overwhelming though, he believed organisms were motivated by the desire to maintain, actualize, and enhance themselves. This is the premise for Rogers’ views on self-actualization wherein he defines the actualizing tendency as part of a universal life force that is influenced by
I do believe that he fundamental choice of personality can be altered if you are determined enough to overcome your insecurities
The use of a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors is what Funder uses to define personality (Funder, 2013). Using this definition of personality the best ways to theorize about Subject A, or Paco, is to use the “Big Five” and use his Culture. Parts of these two theories can help to explain certain parts of Paco’s personality.
I thought my personal traits had already sharpened after plenty of things happening after all. However, it is not true that adulthood personality traits are stable. Even though early adulthood is said to be a mark of personality development, it can be changed to respond with the life challenges (Wright, Pincus, & Lenzenweger, 2012, p.1340). It is assumed that our personality are influenced by an individual’s interaction with the environment (Hutteman, Hennecke, Orth,
In psychological terms, personality is a complex model of traits and characteristics that are responsible for an individual’s behavior. Traits are intrinsic, uniform, and unvarying qualities; however, characteristics change over time. Characteristics can change as individuals grow and experience life, and intelligence and temperament are influenced by an individual's characteristics. Personality is an individual and unique way people think, feel, act and handle different aspects of life (Feist & Feist, 2009). Personality is the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics that are unique to each person.
Nurture has a more stronger influence on your personality than nature does. They both have a huge role in contributing to your personality development, it is a proven fact. Identical twins have a lot of differences, but also many similarities. Your personality can keep changing while you're growing up. Studies have shown that your personality is based off your surroundings and how you have been raised. From now on when you watch how people act, be sure to remember this debate and think about what their personality is based
In the Psychology community, there are numerous explanations and theories as to how one 's personality is developed. Erik Erikson 's Post-Freudian Theory is the theory in which my personality development relates to the most. This is due to his theory stating that personality develops over a life cycle rather than exclusively during infancy (Feist, Feist, Roberts 218). This theory is relatively simple compared to other personality theories. My personality has developed over time as a result of genetics and psychosocial struggle during each of the eight stages in the Post-Freudian Theory.
My overall personality can be concluded as “unpredictable”. This is so because my personality has been continually changing throughout my life. Firstly, during my early and middle childhood i was a humble and accepting person. My culture and environment greatly influence my personality at this age because the elderly both in my family and community had a big role in nurturing me. I did what they told me no matter what it was, because i was raised to believe that the elders know what's best for me.
