The state that was chosen for this project is Delaware. Delaware is a small state located in the Mid-Atlantic. Delaware is usually referred to as the first state, because it was the first state to sign the constitution. Delaware can also be called the Blue Hen State because the blue hen is the official bird of Delaware, and because of the blue hens that Delaware soldiers carried around during the revolutionary war. Delaware even has a third nickname, the Diamond state, because Thomas Jefferson said it was a “jewel.”
Delaware was never a colony. It was called New Sweden when the Swedes took it from the Lenape Native Americans. It was then called New Amstel when the Dutch took it from the Swedes. It then became a part of Pennsylvania, but the people living there did not want to be a part of Pennsylvania. The people eventually gained independence from Pennsylvania, and named the new state Delaware.
Delaware’s oldest ethnic heritage is the Native Americans who called themselves the Lenape. Delaware also has Swedish and Dutch ethnic heritage because they were the first European’s to settle there. Today, Delaware has many people of different heritages living there.
Delaware has some popular cities and attractions. Delaware City is a popular, bustling city in Delaware. Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach are two popular beaches in Delaware. Delaware also has other nice attractions such as the Delaware Art Museum and Brandywine Creek State Park.

Delaware offers a great variety of foods and things to try. From soybeans, to corn, to a lot of chicken, and plenty of crab, there is so much to taste! Definitely do not forget the great food festivals too. There is also a wide variety of heritages, and all four seasons can be experienced there. Even Delaware’s wacky laws, such as the law stating that “no person shall pretend to sleep on a bench on the boardwalk” (Dumb Laws: Stupid Laws: We have Weird Laws, Strange Laws, and Just plain Crazy Laws!), make it an interesting place. All this is how Delaware gets its most recent nickname, small wonder, from how such a small state can have so many wonders.
Delaware, also known as the “breadbasket colony” for its mass production of wheat, was founded in 1636 by Peter Minuit and the New Sweden Company. Named after the Delaware River, whose roots derived from Sir Thomas West, Virginia Company’s first governor, the colony of Delaware was originally named New Sweden as an unsuccessful attempt by the Swedes to found a brand new colony in the New World. From the very start of its colonization, New Sweden was lacking manpower in a mere 10 years, but slowly developed into an agricultural hotspot. A multitude of natural resources such as timber, furs, coal, and iron ore, which were usually exported back to England for a trade, were plentiful in the colony and an important aspect of the Delaware economy.

During the American Revolution, Washington and his men were experiencing a series of defeat. In order to bring about great pride and patriotism of an American, they sought to plan a sneak attack on the opposite force. On December 25, Washington and 5,400 troops began crossing the Delaware River to the Hessian stronghold. At this point in time, the Hessians were celebrating Christmas; this was a perfect time for an attack. When Washington and his men arrived, they started attacking the unsuspected Hessians; nearly 1,000 Hessians were captured. Even though the attack was not significant, it raised American spirit. In 1851, Emanuel Leutze created the image of Washington Crossing the Delaware; the painting was later destroyed, but restored by another artist. The mood of the painting can be described as intense and patriotic. Later, a poem called “Washington Crossing the Delaware” was written by David Shulman. The mood of the poem

Maine is a product from the Ice Age. Its earliest habitants were Ice Age hunters. Little is known about then except that they are known as the “Red Paint” people. They got the name because they used red clay to line the grave of their dead. Maine’s two earliest Indian Nations were the Micmac if the eastern Maine, New Brunswick and the Abaci’s a.k.a (wabanakis). There have been dozens of tribes to inhabit Maine’s land. Only two of which remain. The Passamaquoddies. They have a population of about 1,500 and they live on two reservations. There are also the Penobscot.

The main thing that Mermentau and Philadelphia have in common is the culture. But I’m not talking about the type of culture but the amount of it. It’s obvious that both these places don’t have the same culture. The food and events that take place in each place might be extremely different, however the food and the the events are part of the culture and the culture is what makes the city unique.
