Curing Ebola patients through a blood (plasma) transfusion from Ebola Survivor? According to an ABC news article by Lupkin, one of the two U.S. health-worker, Dr.Brantly (who showed signs of improvement after receiving Zmapp) mentioned that he received a blood transfusion from a 14-year old Ebola survivor before his conditioned worsened. In conclusion, there is a strong theory that a Plasma (see figure 3) from an Ebola survivor could help an Ebola patient if particularly given early.

Dr.William Schaffner concludes that when a human body is confronted with a virus, the immune system begins to create antibodies to specifically target that virus, kill it and keep it from returning back. After a person's immune systems has the antibodies, it stays in their blood for life. Thus, if the ‘ebola antibodies’ found in ebola’s survivor’s blood can be transfused into an Ebola patients, (theoretically) those antibodies can help the patient’s immune system fight off EVD. The antibodies then finds the virus, binds to it and prevents it from multiplying further. However, Dr.Schaffner mentions that even though a sick person’s body is trying to create antibodies, an Ebola infection can be so overwhelming that the patient’s immune system might not be able to keep up with the invading virus. Dr.Michelle Barron cautions that more research is needed to determine if treatments such as Blood plasma transfusion really does work since the data is mixed.
