Inferno: A Doctor’s Ebola Story Book Review
Inferno: A Doctor’s Ebola Story is a story written by Dr. Steven Hatch who is an infectious disease specialist. He is now very well known for his role in helping to contain Ebola. Dr. Steven Hatch gives us a different perspective beyond what the news and newspapers gave us. He was actually seeing what this Ebola virus was doing to individuals, families, and a whole country. Obviously, Dr. Hatch along with all the medical personnel all over the world wanted this disease contained. Ebola from everyone’s point of view is seen as inferno.
Dr. Steven Hatch’s memorable journey began with him volunteering to leave for Liberia in 2013 to work at a hospital in Monrovia to fight Ebola in one of its most affected areas. There were only a few patients with Ebola when he arrived. The number of patients rapidly increased over his time in Liberia. After six months Ebola was declared a world health emergency and not only were ordinary people outside of the hospital getting the virus but the medical personnel that were tending to the patients had caught it and some of them had even died. The first main idea is: the process of evolution drives the diversity of life. Obviously, the Ebola virus had to evolve. The Ebola virus is made up of RNA and another virus. When the virus replicates, the virus genome will most likely change as well. More changes to the virus are often found when a virus crosses from one species to another. “The fruit bat may be Ebola’s ‘natural reservoir’- the creature in which the virus finds its primary home.” (p.15) The virus in bats evolve over time and cross over to another species. In this case, Ebola was crossed over into humans and the virus could become worse and worse as it evolves more.
