The Ebola and Marburg virus are extremely lethal viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever. The Ebola and Marburg virus are both in the virus family of Filoviridae in which Ebola and Marburg are known to be filoviruses. These viruses can be spread easily through the exchange of bodily fluids. When a human body becomes infected by any of these viruses, their body will bleed out internally, as well as externally, where blood rushes out in every opening of the body. The virus causes the internal organs to liquefy as well. Because of the effects, the way it spreads easily from person to person, and its power to easily kill many people, the Ebola and Marburg has the potential to be the slate wiper. In the novel The Hot Zone, the author, Richard Preston, does a wonderful job in explaining and describing how the Ebola and Marburg viruses affect the body through real experiences from the deaths of some of the infected people, as well as the researchers from the CDC and USAMRIID. In very detailed descriptions, Preston let the readers imagine how these viruses go through one’s body, liquefy the body’s internal organs, as well as cause the body to turn into a corpse prior to actually dying. Not many people are aware enough about what these viruses could do, where they came from, nor where the outbreak could start at any moment. Just as Preston describe in his book The Hot Zone, “You can’t fight off Ebola the way you fight off a cold. Ebola does in ten days what it takes AIDS ten years to accomplish” (Preston). The survival rate of these viruses are very low and in most cases, many people who were infected have resulted to death. There is no known cure for these viruses so it would be hard to survive if and when infected. Preston believes that these viruses are slate wipers because of their power to kill and infect many people. These viruses are terrifying and have done unimaginable things to the infected
