A surprising fact about McDonald’s food is that every single item on the menu contains some sort of sugar in it, however, all the food we consume has some sort of sugar in it. Sugar is a carbohydrate found naturally in a wide variety of different foods, from lactose in milk to the fructose in fruit and honey. We do need some sugar in our diets for energy and healthy brain function. However, processed foods (like McDonald’s) has added sugars in the form of calories and not much else. A vast majority of our food we buy at the store or at a restaurant is not from that same town, let alone the US. Therefore, how could it be fresh and still be good to serve? The answer lies in the added preservatives. Preservatives help keep food fresh and have a longer shelf life. It can be chemical additives or just a freezing which enables food be shipped from X to Y without any bacterial growth or decay. Upon speaking to a McDonald’s employee, I learned that all the food they use is frozen and shipped throughout the world to their 31,000 different locations. However, some preservatives have been linked to some cancers and other major health risks. We are introducing these chemicals into our bodies to save money by not spending more on spoiled foods. McDonald’s flash freezes all their food such as meats and cheeses in order to reduce the use of preservatives and since the food they make is consumed almost immediately after being made, there is no logical reason for the extensive use of preservatives in fast food. All food has preservatives in some form or the other, unless it states that it preservatives free or organic.
