1644, that was the year the Great Wall of China was finished being built. It took over 2,000 years to build this massive defense. The Chinese Empire built this wall to prevent the Mongolians and other enemies from invading. While at the time, this way of preventing others from coming into land was effective, would building a wall across the US-Mexican border be effective? Is it worth the price or the usefulness? Unlike the Great Wall of China, will the US-Mexican wall bring many job opportunities? As stated by Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd, “building a wall is the most expensive and least effective way to secure the border.” In fact, journalist Jorge Ramos reported that 40% of immigrants come by plane. Furthermore, there are many, many types of methods to get past Trump's expensive wall other than flying such as digging under, going around, going over with a ladder. The last thing this economy needs is a bigger debt. But according to MIT Technology Review, “the cost could be as much as $40 billion. To give some perspective on this number, the entire national intelligence program’s (the CIA, National Security Agency, etc.) annual budget is $53 billion.”(MIT and Will Hurd, Jan 30) . With the price peaking to this much money, more effective ways of preventing illegal immigration such as strengthening the interior enforcement measures in the United States.
