The great Pyramid of Giza, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China, all of these world wonders have amazing histories. Although the Great Wall had its pros and cons, so was it worth it? The Great Wall of China goes way back in history, it was built centuries ago by the Ming, Han, and Qin dynasty. You may think the wall is great, but the wall’s benefits did not outweigh the costs because it wasted time, brought misery, and gave endless work.
First of all, building and protecting the wall wasted time. In Document B, it stated a list of suggestions to protect China in other ways. In the Background Essay it said,”The Great Wall was never one continuous structure.” While the dynasties were taking care of the wall, for several years, they could’ve used that time to protect China in several other ways. Also, the wall took extremely long to build, enemies attacked during the process. This made

In Document E, it stated,”300,000 men from Qin’s army ordered to build and guard the wall until complete.” To build the Great Wall many peasants and soldiers were forced to leave their families. The workers spent long hours working on the wall in excessive conditions. The conditions were so dreadful that some families had loved ones that never came home. To make matters worse. Most died from hunger or sickness, meaning that they weren’t treated.
Furthermore, the Great Wall of China gave workers an endless amount of work. According to Document E it said,” Not as brutal as Qin’s conditions, but life was still very hard. Many peasants and soldiers attempted to move across the border to live with the Xiongnu.” The work never ended because eventually the wall needed replacements or had to be fixed. Also, the wall was supposed to protect China when it killed thousands of its workers. It was a barrier from the Xiongnu, but once they were gone, it took more work to keep the wall standing to protect the Silk
Around 220 CE the Han dynasty that rules China starts many attacks on the northern nomads. The Han have conquered and received new territories. In the year 1961, the building of Berlin Wall called upon disasters in Germany. United States controlled the west of Berlin while German Democratic Republic held the East. Being stuck under the rule of day to day terror, people from East Berlin were making their way to the West Berlin. West Berlin was a safe spot and freedom checkpoint in the middle of terror. To stop the moving of East Berliners, the East German government decided to build a barrier that limited and halted the East Berliners from leaving. But the battle to control Berlin between, the United States and the Soviet Union, had been taking place since after the division of Germany. The German Democratic Republic wanted better control over its people to spread its communist ideas
Have you ever wondered why both the Panama Canal and the Great Wall of China are such iconic land marks for the countries they are in? It’s because of the magnitude of effort that took to create such massive structures. Hard work, blood, tears, sweat and certainly patience played part in the creation of such marvels. However the purpose behind each structure and the challenges builders faced during their construction is what truly sets them apart.
Zedong was supported in making the decision of what was known as the “Great Leap Forward”. This wild plan was aimed at making the people of China achieve economic advances in just a few years that would usually take other countries decades to accomplish. Zedong believed that in order to achieve his goals that steel production was necessary in his plans. Instead of working in areas that were not being used such as fields for example, above millions of peasants were forced to work on local deposits of iron ore and limestone, cutting down healthy trees to look for charcoal, and to have metal smelted. The result of this work did not go as planned. Steel was not produced. The only thing that was produced was pieces of brittle. These pieces of brittle were no use for even the simplest of tools. Peasants that were working on these sights were then ordered to abandon all private production in food which resulted in high reductions in
China was without a doubt one of the most innovative countries by reason of their many advances made throughout the Shang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Numerous accomplishments were archived by this empire. Their form of government was based on Dynasties, which are series of rulers from the same family. Different dynasties brought out different successes, such as the famous Great wall, which was a 13,170 miles fortress built around around 206 A.C. by millions of people. This structure was ordered to build by China’s first emperor, Qin, in the interest of protecting the Empire from invaders. Another extraordinary Chinese invention was paper. This universal utensil was created in the 2nd century B.C. by Cai Lun. The creating of this material

Chin Shi Huang, the originator of the wall and who the great country gets its name after probably wouldn’t of ever expected the wall to be a 4,500 mile long masterpiece that would have turned out to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World! The Qin wall was built to keep people out, and to keep people in.
China still uses the Wall today, as well. The vast structure serves as a popular tourist attraction, thus, stimulating Chinese economy. Throughout its lifetime, the masterpiece repelled invaders such as the Mongols from the empire that would soon be most of China. This protection allowed China to undergo some of the most vital advancements, such as standardization of things like currency, which unified to the six very different cities that this nation is comprised of. This great work of mankind is often overlooked and forgotten, unfortunately. Not too many people know of the influence the Great Wall has had on China. Hopefully one day, all across the globe will know of the incredible good that this ancient marvel has done for one of the world’s most prolonged societies.
The Berlin Wall was put up for one of the most historically common reasons any country would do anything radical: political and economical gain. East Germany was controlled by communist Russia. In contrast, West Germany was controlled by the U.S., France, and Great Britain. Germans who lived in East Germany wanted to move to West Germany to seek better living styles. Approximately 2.7 million Germans escaped from East Germany to West Germany. As a result, East Germany had an astonishing lack of population. Of course, that was a detrimental blow to the economy of East Germany, including a scarce work force. To put a stop to escaping Germans, East Germany constructed the 103 mile, 12 foot high Berlin Wall. To increase East Germany’s population, people were allowed entry into East Germany by means of the Berlin Wall. However, people were not allowed to depart from East Germany by means of the Berlin Wall. Basically, once people entered East Germany, they were not departing. Building the Berlin Wall was a complete violation of the Germans’ right to freedom, all for political gain.

The Berlin wall stood in the face of the allies and they were able to continue to be peaceful and continue to protect their people while fighting in proxy wars across the country. To the people inside the wall it was a sign of oppression and to those that escaped a sign of the past. Today pieces of the Berlin Wall are around the country and you can touch a piece of
Historians often compare the Sui Dynasty to the Qin Dynasty. One of Sui’s goals was to renovate the most enduring monument of the Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall of China. The Sui Dynasty fought to expand China, incorporating what is now Xinjiang and Vietnam into the new empire. Yangdi, however, alienated his people and imposed harsh taxes, thereby sacrificing millions of laborers’ lives to extract an extravagant palace. His rule prompted rebellion and Yangdi was murdered in
In the reign of Emperor Wu of Western Han, the Wall played a significant role in protecting the main force as well as being a military base in the wars.” Without the wall being there the Chinese might have been defeated by other civilizations and not even exist today. But with the help of the wall the Chinese were able to conquer more territory than ever before. Hadrian’s Wall could be compared as one of the first small scale versions of today’s U.S, Mexico border wall because they both serve a similar purpose of controlling the flow of goods. Hadrian’s Wall main purpose was not to necessarily defend Rome’s territory, but to provide a sort of monitoring system for the trade that flowed in and out of the border with present day Scotland, in order to ensure they collected all the taxes they could for their government. Truth be told, it turns out that the wall was actually quite successful in doing this, despite its present state which makes it seem like more of a fence then an actual wall. However, from images of Hadrian’s Wall, it is evident that the Romans must have invested lots of time and money
When the Berlin Wall was constructed, East Germany went into a state of panic, fell into poverty, and adopted a communist government. The citizens of the GDR were filled with terror and anxiety when the border separating them from friends, family, and lovers was constructed. Many attempted to escape but every passing day, the wall became more and more menacing. Trapped, the people of East Germany were forced to cope with the shortage of goods, accept the fact that anybody could be a spy for the STASI, and follow the rule of an oppressive government. Although conditions were grim, the people of the East united together in order to survive. The wall is but a thing of the past, but it will always be remembered by every individual in Germany and the rest of the world.
