According to the Merriam Webster, exercise is defined as “physical activity that is done in order to become stronger and healthier”. Exercise is essential in achieving optimal health, as it pushes us out of our comfort zone and away from disease and death. It helps us to find a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being as well as a balance between them all. Many believe that exercise can only benefit a person physically, but this is simply fallacious. Exercise contributes to all the seven dimensions of health; emotional, environmental, social, intellectual, spiritual, and of course physical. Throughout research it is said that active people are less stressed and that with the bare minimum of five minutes of exercise people will be positively affected, their mood will begin to change for the better. The moods of people do indeed increase as endorphins spread all throughout the bodies of people when they exercise. People that exercise are also frequently less depressed. Stress hormones are said to decrease while people exercise, it is also true that some exercises slow down heart rates and blood pressures, all things that would rise in a stressful situation. Exercise is very beneficial some ways less noticeably but in others very noticeable, especially in the emotional factor. Exercise can increase one’s spiritual health by making one feel as if they are a part of a greater spectrum of existence through yoga, tai chi, etc. These exercises specialize in decreasing stress levels, finding inner peace and acceptance for one self, and lifting up spirits. They aid in easing the subconscious mind which has the tendency to control our lives.
