Nursing is a very complex career. It involves several different kinds of skills. Perhaps one of the most important skills is communication. In the healthcare setting, there are multiple disciplines that come together to care for patients. With this kind of care, communication between each discipline is crucial to ensure that everyone is properly caring for the patient. The nurse is the health care provider that is at the bedside of the patient the most and has the most direct contact with the loved ones of the patient. The Josie King story is very heart breaking. This is a very difficult story to hear. This family came to the hospital for help and left with a terrible outcome. This story also upsets me because the mother knew that something was not normal with her daughter and no one listened to her concerns. As a nurse I will spend the most time at the bedside of the patient. I believe that as the nurse keeping patients safe will involve close monitoring, listening to the family, and carefully reviewing the orders. Utilizing all of these resources will help to ensure the safety of my patients. I believe that if the nurses and other health care workers had paid more attention to these areas that Josie would not have passed away. I believe the number one cause for error in this case was not closely monitoring Josie. After listening to Josie’s mother it seemed that all of the nurses and doctors were just quickly looking at Josie. They did not seem to really stop and look at the changes she was experiencing. There were so many obvious signs that Josie’s health was declining that it could have been prevented. Josie’s mother tried to tell nurses and doctors several times that something was not right with her daughter and her worries were pushed aside.
