School start times have been a discussion in many schools throughout the United States. Everyday, kids wake up tired and not ready for the day. Some students might even skip the day because they feel exhausted. If a test is in the morning, a student might perform worse because of the time of day, then in the afternoon, they would be awake and ready. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but the majority of kids do not have time in the morning due to the early start time. When most students wake up, they have to get ready, brush their teeth, and get to their ride. That is not possible if schools starts so early. The money saved would mean added money for academics. This would allow more sports to be played and more money for the classrooms. In an article the new system is explained, “The WCPSS Transportation Department estimates that over the 10 year period from 1993 to 2003, using a three-tiered bus system saved roughly saved 100 million dollars in transportation costs.” (Mozes) With this 100 million dollars, schools could spend it on classrooms and keeping the school up to date. Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. I believe that school should have a later start because it improves the way students and the school environment in many ways. School usually starts at eight a.m. and I believe it should start around nine a.m. This gives students an extra hour of sleep or more time in the morning to get ready or eat a bigger meal. One of the reasons I believe school should start later is because students will gain more sleep. More sleep will improve grades because sleep refreshes your mind and lets your brain rest for a long school day. Secondly, in the opposing side school should stay at an earlier time for multiple conclusions. Furthermore, sports already end late enough and now it would end even later which means more tired parents/guardians. Also, kids with jobs after school. Many kids have responsibilities at home as for paying bills or contributing certain needs. Importantly, family time is a priority for students. One may have to get siblings off the bus and one cannot to that at a later time in the day. Picture elementary kids getting out extremely late; they will not even be able to play and go through the child lifestyle with homework, eat, and sleep.

If students aren't happy with their classes or schedule, it should be allowed to change. A later start would really impact schools because it’s been scientifically proven that students brains don’t officially wake up until about nine or ten o'clock in the morning. If we change the school start time to ten o’clock it would allow children to have a better ability learning new things and less students would be sleep-deprived. Another thing that should be taken into account is a longer lunch because it gives students a little time to have fun. Schools also need a longer lunch because calling zones takes a long time and usually the last zone called barely has enough time to finish their food.
What would mornings be like if school started later in the morning? Every morning I feel like I am racing against the clock because of the little amount of time that I have to attend athletic practices, make my bed, get dressed, and eat breakfast. Also, other students talk about how they did not have time to get a proper good night’s sleep because of the early school starting time. Therefore, having more time in the morning would help many students achieve their necessities. School should begin later in the morning so that students can have more time to be better prepared to hit the books.
The main reason why high schools are still not changing their hours is because of the buses. She says, “ Lubbock ISD in Texas is anticipating saving more than 1 million dollars by utilizing start times prior to 8 a.m. at some campuses. Suffolk Public Schools in Virginia estimates that by starting some campuses at 7:25 a.m. they will be able to save around $680,000 a year”(Anderson). By starting high schools so early it is saving money because the buses pick up high schoolers and middle schoolers first then they pick up elementary students, requiring less buses and bus drivers. Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
