School start times have been a discussion in many schools throughout the United States. Everyday, kids wake up tired and not ready for the day. Some students might even skip the day because they feel exhausted. If a test is in the morning, a student might perform worse because of the time of day, then in the afternoon, they would be awake and ready. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but the majority of kids do not have time in the morning due to the early start time. When most students wake up, they have to get ready, brush their teeth, and get to their ride. That is not possible if schools starts so early. The students would have to wake up at obscure times, not meeting the standard hours of sleep that they need. The bus system at the moment does not save money. The money saved would mean added money for academics. This would allow more sports to be played and more money for the classrooms. In an article the new system is explained, “The WCPSS Transportation Department estimates that over the 10 year period from 1993 to 2003, using a three-tiered bus system saved roughly saved 100 million dollars in transportation costs.” (Mozes) With this 100 million dollars, schools could spend it on classrooms and keeping the school up to date. The bus system with a one hour later start time saves the school money. In conclusion, school start times in the United States should have a one hour later start time. Also, grades go up if there is a one hour later start time. This is because more sleep lets the brain focus in. The buses would also save money. This would cause the school to have more money and let the school spend more on academics, not transportation.
