In the 20th century, countries were put into three categories first world nations (democratic), second world nations(communist/socialist), and third world nations (they were neither socialist or democratic). These terms are outdated today. Countries are classified as developed or developing nations. More developed nations are advanced in terms of industrialization, economic status, health, governance, and human rights. Developing nations lack and struggle with the basic needs to keep a country running successfully. Among the developing nations, this research paper focus will be on Colombia. Military regimes have plagued Latin America for decades and they commit human right violations daily. The state has had to compete with warlords, guerilla groups, and drug cartels which in some places appear to threaten its very existence (Burnell, Ranker, and Randall, 2014, pp 74-75). Amnesty International (2016) reports that the Leftist Guerrillas ( the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or FARC) and the Illegal right wing paramilitary organizations (National Liberation Army or ELN) are wreaking havoc in Colombia. In addition, the Colombian Military are intervening with both sides. Innocent people are have to move out of their homes to avoid fatal shoot outs and no one is being brought to justice. According to, Burnell, Rakner, and Randall (2014, p.297) “ Narcotic trafficking activity in places such as, Colombia and Afghanistan damages economies, corrupts institutions, and affects regional stability and security”. Colombia is the world’s top cocaine producer and heroine is on the rise also (Burnell, Ranker, Randall 2014 p.297; Cano, 2010) . Cocaine and heroine are associated with major health problems and violence. Heroine can cause AIDS due to the sharing of needles and cocaine can cause heart attacks.
