Our religion class had the pleasure of having two members of the Agape Community present to us what the Agape Community does, the people within it and what it has to offer to society. The Agape Community was founded in 1982 and has a belief system that revolves around living in a nonviolent Christian environment where one finds belief within yourself, others and family. Within the Agape community you live a life of devotion to life examples of Jesus by daily prayer, outreach programs, practice of silence, and meditation. They have morals based on the love and protection of the natural world, which correlates with resistance to war and violence. “Tread lightly on the Earth” is a saying they follow there which represents the organic and natural lifestyle they live at the Agape Community. They build all of their own houses, their own organic vegetable garden, solar panels, compost toilet, and even a car that runs specifically on vegetable oil. They believe in undercutting selfishness and giving back to the community and the world around them. Overall the Agape Community believes that they are responsible to carry out a passionate religious message, speak out in truth and live for Jesus. They want to enrich one’s life by following in the footsteps of the lord, Jesus and Christian community. The ministry wants to produce education on having a right and positive livelihood that will guide you from the present to the future in the way the Lord would want you to do so. Borg called The Heart of Christianity” together. In the Agape community they praise one another and their surroundings by recognizing and valuing what they offer to the world, which then relates to Borg’s thought of panentheism where God recognizes and values the universe and everything in it. With that said they also relate to each other because everything and the universe is within God, not separate, which togetherness like such is also demonstrated in the Agape Community. According to Borg, God is a personal being where our relationship towards him is personal and emotional commitment that has an essence of being cared for. Within the Agape community one creates the same relationship to god but also a similar relationship with the community and the people in it. They all create a relationship where they care for one another and the offerings that Earth makes towards the community. Borg also mentions how Christ is what can be seen of God as embodied in human life and this is evident in the Agape community because on an everyday basis they see the Lord within everything they do and within everyone they communicate with.
