Books: a group of blank white pages where authors record memories, reveal what they imagined, and take us along on a ride through their minds. These past few weeks, I had been reading two popular novels that did in fact take me on that journey: The Outsiders written by S.E. Hinton, and Miracle’s Boys by Jacqueline Woodson. In no uncertain terms, I did notice that these two books could be compared to one another. Although these are two separate books, written by two different authors with separate journeys, they actually have great similarities and differences in the characters and plot.

I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. The principles of influence are essential to establish how people perceive you. Most of the times how people see or perceive us in social life is not at all accurate. However, in business life is very important that people perceive us in a certain way in order to improve our influence in others, and continuously improve negotiation skills. Like many nights, a book can take me hours past the time I should have gotten some shut eye. When I finally do, I often dream of what’s to come trying to imagine the outcome of the story. Only to later find out that the author has thrown me for a loop. Reading allows me to be taken from reality and see into the depth of another world almost. In each book I read I am filled with great pleasure which sometimes can result in devastation.
As a child, I had a love hate relationship with reading. I loved reading the books I picked out and I hated reading the books my mom picked out for me. My child self believed that my mom only wanted me to read the books that taught me a lesson. I only wanted to read the fun books where the cover had caught my eye at the local library. As an adult I now understand what my mom was trying to teach me about reading, however, as a child, I wanted to rebel and read what I wanted to. Now, fifteen years later, I now understand my mom wanted to show me there are more books in the world than the ones where the cover catches your eye. She taught me that sometimes you have to read outside your comfort zone to find true treasures in literature. I transitioned from Carolyn Keene’s Nancy Drew to Tamora Pierce’s Tortall and Circle of Magic series in childhood, to J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind as a teenager and adult. My mom’s lessons on reading helped me grow as a reader and begin a love affair with the written word, no matter the genre.
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
I will never forget the very first volume I took out after getting my card at the local branch of the public library, when I was seven. Its title was as unforgettable as the effect it had on me, although I have no recollection of the author's name. Ab the Cave Man transformed my notion of what a book was capable of being. Until then, my contact with reading had been the stultifying Dick and Jane stuff of the classroom -- I had no idea that reading could be fun, that a boy could be transported to another place and another time, and become so engrossed by descriptions and characters that he lost all consciousness of his surroundings, his worldly concerns and the very hour of the day.
