Currently, in the United States, “eight million Americans suffer with an eating disorder” (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Though many may think that an eating disorder is only common in a woman’s life, men also suffer from this disease. Taking that statistic further, “ninety five percent of Americans between the ages of twelve and twenty five have an eating disorder” (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Men and women develop an eating disorder which results from a psych disorder. This disease is becoming an issue in America because “10% of Americans die in 10 years from an eating disorder” and everyone must become educated on this topic (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 2013, p.1). Others may disagree to attend educational events because they are not affected by this disease. To solve this problem, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must have all Americans who are suffering from an eating disorder attend classes that are taught by survivors of an eating disorder. The main problem is that many Americans are suffering from an eating disorder that takes over their lives in a mental and physical state. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention needs to take note of this problem and look into this solution. Many Americans struggle with an eating disorder their entire life because they think that they are fine or they are too afraid to admit that they have a problem. All victims of eating disorders need to realize that there are thousands of other people in the United States that are struggling with the same problem. Cara Newlon announced that a study was done in 2011 that revealed that eighteen percent of teenage males were concerned of their physical appearance. In this article, Newlon wanted the audience to know that eating disorders do not just happen in females. Men also struggle with their appearance and work hard to have the perfect athletic body. The males will harm their bodies by taking supplement pills to lose weight. Some take steroids because they are so desperate. Males are just as affected from eating disorders as females, but they take a different route to destroy their bodies.
