Without a cell phone many people are lost. They feel like they are cut off from the world and have no way to contact the people that they need to. These advertisements play on that by showcasing the usefulness of phones. They also use the devices as an excuse to show their wealth to others and cause people to desire to be like them. Settings also affect how the phones are viewed. Is the setting dark, sunny, or is it simply a blank space? Some people may associate the usefulness of phones to the usefulness of themselves. The father and son are both seen using the phone and this showcases the family friendliness of the portable phone. The setting of the ad also has an effect on how people perceive the phone. The multiple settings of the boat, restaurant, and park highlight the portability and ease of talking anywhere, at any time of day. The overall light atmosphere in the ad affects people by rubbing off on them a little. The positive connotations associated with sunshine and being outdoors like they are in the park and on a boat influence people to feel more attracted to the ad. Also the brightness of it draws the people’s eye and has them pay more attention. This, paired with the narrator’s relaxed and warm voice creates an advertisement that grabs the audience. Humor was also a tool that they utilized to transition away from the benefits of the device to the benefits of Radio Shack 's low prices.
