The triple bottom line is a measurement of performance which includes social, environmental, and financial aspects. These are also referred to as the 3 P’s known as: people, planet and profit. The reason the company did this in Europe was because it was a requirement, the company got bad publicity for this decision and ended up offering this service to customers in the United States. Measuring sustainability can be difficult for business, and even more difficult for small business like a bed and breakfast. The hotel industry does have a Hotel Carbon Measurement Index (HCMI) where thousands of hotels record their carbon footprint of hotel stays and meetings. The HCMI is used to help customers understand a hotel’s carbon footprint, as well as help the hotel reach their own carbon footprint goals. Another tool that is used by Hilton is called LightStay, which is to track their efficiency projects. LightStay also has a Face-book feature for hotel owners where you can become a part of a social media platform and measure yourself against others in the industry and share ideas (Gunther, M. This paper will discuss the five environmental factors that influence global and domestic marketing decisions that organizations must make. These five environmental factors are technology, demographics, government, culture and economics. Companies are affected differently by these factors depending on the industry they are in and the size of the organization. I will be using the Washington Plaza Hotel to illustrate how these environmental factors affect the hotel industry's marketing decisions. The Washington Plaza Hotel is a hospitality business located in Washington, DC. They offer services such as lodging, restaurant, bar, catering and meeting space rental. The Washington Plaza Hotel's major customer base is government, tourist, non-profit organizations, local businesses and some corporate clientele. Let's now take a look at how these environmental factors affect the marketing of the hotel.
