There are two artworks that I would like to compare and contrast in this research paper. The first artwork is “Abduction of the Sabine Women,” by Giovanni da Bologna, better known as Giambologna, in the Mannerism period. This week I toured and explored the famous Academia, home to Michelangelo Buonarroti’s many wonderful pieces including the statue of David. The David was carved by Michelangelo from 1501-1504. It was originally intended for one of the buttresses of the cathedral in Florence and was designed to be effective at a distance of forty feet. However, after it was finished, the Signoria placed it in front of the Palazzo della Signoria as a symbol of the Florentine Republic. The statue of David is incredible
Giambologna was late Renaissance or Mannerist style sculptor, who was born in Douai, France. His sculptures greatest characteristics are dynamic movement and detail studies of the human body. Winged Mercury is one of the Gods from ancient Roman myth. Mercury has many roles but in Giambologna’s sculpture he means the messengers. This is is a creation by the Flemish artist Jean Boulogne better known by his alias, Giambologna.
