Aim
This experiment is to investigate the tolerance level of grey water in tomato plants and what effect the gray water will have on the environment?
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that plants are able to tolerate small amount of detergent, but after the detergent solution reach it’s threshold level, it can affect the plant’s growth, ultimately resulting in the plants death.
Background
Water is essential to the all life on earth, including plants. But with the growth of population, humans are facing more and more water problems: including water pollution and water shortage. It has become the biggest problem in the world to date. Most of the water pollution is caused by the heavy industries,pollution, and grey water discharged by households on a daily basis.

Detergent are defined as "a cleansing substance that acts similarly to soap but is made from chemical compounds rather than fats and lye" (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language). Modern detergents contain a chemical called a surfactant which can cause water and soil pollution and is quite harmful to plants. An average Australian house can produce about 400 litres of grey water a day. This water may not be used again. But with rising costs and people’s awareness of saving water, more and more people start to use their water resources more wisely. The Australian Government encourages citizens to use grey water for the garden, for example waste water from the bathroom, hand basin, shower, and laundry can be used to water the household plants. The main experiment will be done with more colours if it proves successful - I will repeat the experiment with more colours: red, orange, green, blue and purple filters. I will take three readings for the preliminary experiment and five for the main experiment so that I can take an average for each colour. Fair Test * Pond weed is from the same pond. * Pond weed kept in dark for 24+ hours. * Pond weed stored in same conditions, darkness, temperature etc… * Same sized pieces of pond weed (~5cm) * Same temperatures (fridge, room and water) * Same room and cold water from the same tap.

Every year millions of American’s purchase chemicals intended to clean their home, remove weeds from lawns, and promise to eradicate various insects and other household pests. It is a deadly love affair with scientific advancements to create larger crops, more appealing food items and the promise of cleaner environments. Yet until recent years and the noticeable focus on organic and natural foods, very few have questioned these advancements. Rachel Carson was one of the people who had the courage and determination to stand up and question just how healthy these new advancements truly were for living creatures. Mrs. Carson’s effort to bring these things to light in her most well-known book, Silver Spring, a book that exposed just how dangerous the chemical dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and other synthetic chemicals was to the environment, animals, and humans. There was much more to her efforts and her concerns than just her coverage of DDT. Through her valiant devotion, Rachel Carson’s work lives on and the world is wiser to the potential hazards associated with scientific chemical advancements. Her life and her work is a reminder that the human populace is not lone entities on this planet.

When you think of problems in the world today, water pollution isn’t one that would normally come up. In fact it is one of the worst problems in the world today. Water pollution, by definition, is the contamination of streams, lakes, underground water, bays, or oceans by any substances harmful to living things. All living things contain water and most need water to survive, so water pollution is a big problem. If severe, the pollution can kill off birds, fish, and any animals that use the water source. Detergent comes from the Latin word detergere meaning to clean, it is defined as a cleansing agent. Therefore, water itself is a detergent. This essay looks at soap and soapless (or synthetic) detergents. Both substances we use everyday and have a big market commercially, they effect everyone. Soaps are made from natural products and soapless detergents are produced chemically, each having advantages and disadvantages.
Pharmaceutical waste seems to be one of the dominant elements that are prevalent in our waters, and other aspects of the environment.
