Robert Louis Stevenson once said “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.” I believe that every teacher has the opportunity to plant seeds of knowledge and love of education into our students, and ultimately that is our purpose in this wonderful profession.
My belief of my role as an educator encompasses several parts. In the 21st century, education can no longer be strictly about academics. Education today must now look at emotional, social, academic and physical forms of education. An educator’s role is to be facilitators in learning, not just an individual who pours out knowledge and hopes the students can remember some of the information. An educator must use every available opportunity to guide students in hands on and collaborative learning, and ultimately create lifelong learners. We work together in various jobs and projects and students need to be taught not only to simply memorize the information given to them, but to use that information in a collaborative manner with their peers.

Education is not only about teaching our subject whether it be Chemistry, English or Algebra, but teaching our students how to be productive human beings within society. Teachers need to make sure that students not only walk away with mastery of the standard, but also mastery of life skills.

By incorporating technology into lessons and labs, and allowing the students to use the technology available to them, they will learn to respect what it can do, as well as learning when it’s appropriate to use it for fun or for education.
Personally, I believe teaching is one of the most honorable professions any one person can choose to be part of. Teaching is one of the only professions that can have a profound impact on the future of our towns, state, country and world. Learning cannot be forced onto anyone, so as a teacher it is my role to plant the seeds and develop in students a love of education and learning. It is a role that I cherish and take very seriously!
